Health Saga

Both Kitchen Table Kibitzing and New Day Cafe are my equivalent of Facebook so I feel it's appropriate to share some dramatic personal health news.

About a month ago I noticed blood in my urine, so i immediately contacted my long-time Kaiser doctor, who swung into action. I got tests, including a CT scan, which showed a tumor in my bladder. I began research via Google, but soon ceased that because, well, it was fraught. I was scheduled for surgery. This is called transurethral resection…..removal of the tumor. This was done in a one hour operation by my urologist, surely the finest surgeon anywhere. Tissue was sent to Pathology, and I began the wait for news. Kaiser Medicare Advantage obviated any financial worries,

It was explained that there are two categories of cancer cells, good and bad (good being a relative term). There are treatments for both types, also good and bad. So I awaited the results, while my mind contemplated the future. I was fortunate that belinda ridgewood and maggiejean took over my Sunday diaries so I didn’t have to give them a thought. I felt great physically. In fact the day after the surgery, perhaps due to residual anesthesia, I talked to my whole family, both kids and Mary, for hours and hours. I couldn’t stop talking. They bore it well.

Two days ago I got the report. “we did find cancer but it remains low grade and non invasive. This cancer does have higher chances of coming back but very low chances of ever becoming more aggressive.”

These words were better than winning the lottery; actually, I did win the lottery of life. I will have to watch this, with frequent hospital visits, probably forever. My doctor said “You’ll get to know me through the years.”

The scheduled trip to Viet Nam in December will take place as planned.

I am so lucky.
