IAN: The Incomparable Miss Peggy Lee [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2023-07-23

Born Norma Delores Engstrom in 1920, Peggy Lee left a miserable home life at 17 and rose to receive enormous accolades as a singer and a songwriter, and kept firm control of every aspect of her career.

She was coined “the female Frank Sinatra” by Tony Bennett, and she considered it one of the highest compliments. But Lee did something few of her male counterparts ever attempted: she wrote songs. ✂️ Much like her friend Sinatra, she did things “her way.” She not only wrote many of her own songs, but she was involved in every aspect of her performances, from producing to costume and lighting design. www.peggylee.com/...

“Fever”

"I regard singing pretty much like acting. Each song is like playing a different role. I get very involved with my material. I feel a responsibility for the emotion it brings out in the listener." ~ Peggy Lee

Hi! I’m Itzl!

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

“Why Don’t You Do Right”

There was a subtlety about Peggy Lee. It was powerful. There was a valuable use of space. Everything was not cluttered. Her voice was out front and was the key instrument. —Rita Coolidge

“The Best Is Yet To Come”

"The thing that I always notice that dates a record is the rhythm section. With a good arranger the music can be timeless. But, rhythm can change, because heaven knows, we didn't know rock was going to come in, did we?" ~ Peggy Lee

Here’s a 10-minute CBS retrospective with reminiscences from her granddaughter.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Peggy Lee [...] demonstrated an alluring command over an audience with her sultry voice and precise stagecraft.
