How to Pay a Traffic Ticket from Italy [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

I went on a great vacation to Italy ( great scenery! nice people! il gelato! il vino bianco! la cucina Italiana!) came back and almost two months later found a traffic ticket in my email, forwarded by the car rental agency. Apparently I had been Bad, although I didn’t realize it at the time. Even in smaller cities, all traffic tickets are recorded via camera and then either mailed or emailed to the offender, with a demand for payment.

The car rental agency provided no information on how to pay the ticket. I searched on line and found a lengthy explanation on TripAdvisor — which turned out to only be correct if you got your ticket in Rome. I emailed the car rental people and got no response.

The one instruction on the TripAdvisor blog that was helpful was to download the ticket (six pages of 5 point type in Italian) into Google Translate, which provided a pdf file in English. Look at the ticket on a laptop or desktop, not your smartphone — the type is TINY.

If you have no intention of ever going back to any EU country, you can probably ignore the ticket.

If you might go back to the land of art, opera, and great food, you need to pay the ticket as soon as possible. The rental car company was probably slow in sending on the ticket, and you will have probably a month or less to pay the fine before penalties go up.

Look for this entry (in the Italian original) : DOVE PAGARE? Lista dei canali di pagamento su: www.pagopa.gov.it ( means: Where to pay: List of payment methods on www.pagopa.gov.it)

The pagopa website may NOT be the the correct website for your ticket. Find the DOVE PAGARE? line on the licket and look for the website that is indicated.

Go to the correct website, or download the app. Warning: it’s all in Italian. “Paga ora” means “Pay now”

There will be a QR code on the ticket. If you have a smartphone, take a photo of the QR code. If you don’t have a smartphone or don’t want to download the app, you can enter the information manually. Enter an email address and your name. Copy the number under “Codice Avviso” (about 16 numerals) and paste it in the indicated spot on the website. Next, copy the number under “Cod.Fiscale Ente Creditore” (10-11 numerals). If both were correctly entered, a summary of your ticket should appear. Hit the “Continua” button.

Now you get to enter your credit card number. BEFORE YOU ENTER YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER, call the credit card issuer and explain that you are planning to pay a ticket on an Italian website. Make sure your bank will not refuse the transaction because it thinks there is fraud involved.

IF YOUR CREDIT CARD GOES THROUGH: You have fixed the problem and can get on with your life.

IF YOUR CREDIT CARD DOES NOT GO THROUGH: (and you have checked with your bank) the problem may be with the agency that deals with foreign credit cards. The first one on the list may not be able to deal with USA credit cards.

Change the Transaction Manager (PSP) by clicking on "Edit" on the screen that appears after entering your payment card details and before confirming the transaction. Daily Kos would not let me attach an example screenshot of the website.

(It says)

COME SCEGLIERE IL GESTORE:

Il pagamento sura gestito -[and states the name of the transfer agency]

— Hit “edit”. Change the name of this agency to the next one on the list

Then try to put the transaction through. It should work.

This post is being put forwards as a public service — although it has very little to do with electing more and better Democrats.
