Good News from the Spanish General Election Results [1]

Despite nearly everyone projecting the progressive left-wing coalition government in Spain would be booted from power in Sunday's snap general election, the conservative People's Party and their erstwhile far-right allies Vox failed to gain enough seats to form a working majority in the new Cortez (parlement) -- falling 7 short of the 176 needed for an outright win.

The balance of power is now held by the 28 seats representing mostly Catalan and Basque separatist parties, some of whom were part of the current coalition, but others are apparently reluctant to support either faction. This could result in a whole new election if neither side is able to secure a majority in the next 2 months of negotiations.

And while governmental paralysis in the interim might not be considered particularly good news, the fact that the far-right Vox party which had run on a virulently anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ platform saw its share of seats fall from 52 to 33 is definitely worth celebrating!
