While Climate Denialistas are refusing to acknowledge climate change, fighting anything that might make things better while pushing for things to make it worse, and are displaying their militant contrarianism all over social media when they’re not trying to “what about” or change the subject — (Ruben Bolling nails it) — there’s this.
We’ve now reached — as predicted decades ago — the point where filling the atmosphere with greenhouse gases is cranking up the planetary thermostat to lethal levels. We’re seeing killer heatwaves that last for days and weeks, storms that dump massive amounts of water causing flooding and huge amounts of damage, wind events that flatten crops and buildings, crop failures like the crash of Georgia Peaches, and so on. (Rule of Claw points out how one weather event in the wrong place can have a huge impact.)
And it’s only going to get worse because a tremendous amount of warming is already baked in. We are faced with two necessities: stop putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere ASAP, and start doing what we can to adapt — or die.
Which is where the Yale Climate Center comes into the picture. To quote from their “About YCC” page:
Yale Climate Connections is a nonpartisan, multimedia service providing daily broadcast radio programming and original web-based reporting, commentary, and analysis on the issue of climate change, one of the greatest challenges and stories confronting modern society. Since the fall of 2007, Yale Climate Connections has aimed to help citizens and institutions understand how the changing climate is already affecting our lives. It seeks to help individuals, corporations, media, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, academics, artists, and more learn from each other about constructive “solutions” so many are undertaking to reduce climate-related risks and wasteful energy practices. Through articles, radio stories, videos, and webinars, we “connect the dots” between climate change and energy, extreme weather, public health, food and water, jobs and the economy, national security, the creative arts, and religious and moral values, among other themes.
You can sign up for their newsletter here. They feature weekly publications full of all kinds of useful information and links. Here’s just a sampling from the most recent one I got.
• 30 great tools to determine your flood risk in the U.S.
The 30 tools include five new risk-rating agencies, FEMA flood maps, interactive sea level rise maps, ZIP-code-level flood insurance rate data, Army Corps levee and dam databases, and sea level rise forecast tools.
Already have too many messages flooding your email inbox? You can go right to yalelimateconnections.org to access information at your convenience. Here’s one story that is particularly relevant now that we are in hurricane season.
Everything to buy if a hurricane is forecast for your area Add these supplies to your emergency kit.
Given that climate emergencies can hit with little advance warning, being prepared ahead of time can make a critical difference, both during the event and in the aftermath. Take a look at the lists, see how they match up with what you have, and think about what you in particular might need to add.
