The only thing that surprises me about this is that it took so long.

Girkin, aka Igor Strelkov, is a notorious war criminal and convicted murderer. He was the commander of Russia’s proxy militia in Donbas but had become increasingly critical of Russia’s war effort.

His wife said he had been taken away on Friday morning, while she was not at home, and charged with extremism. Strelkov, a former intelligence officer, played a key role in Russia's 2014 landgrab of Crimea. He went on to lead Russia's proxy army in the ensuing war in eastern Ukraine. He was one of three men convicted in absentia by a Dutch court last November of murder for his role in a missile strike in 2014 that downed a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet over the conflict area, with the loss of all 298 people on board. But as the full-scale invasion of last year became increasingly bogged down, Strelkov's criticism of military failings and the commander in chief, President Vladimir Putin, became more vociferous.

If he is never heard from again, it will be no loss to humanity.

This was his most recent post, in which he called out Putin.

x Girkin's not in the mood today, calling out Putin for being a coward and a mediocrity.

But in fact, a man who killed 300 people on board of a plane 9 years ago did not even bother commenting on it.

x Very interesting to see where Girkin's arrest will go. Nothing says he won't be released, but if he is arrested and sentenced for a while, I'll be curious to know if any rashists will properly stand behind him.

Girkin was also a critic of Wagner warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin and it is reported that a Wagner official turned him in, as if that was needed.

x Dmitriy Petrovskiy, ex MP from Russian Yaroslavl and Wagner employee, claims it was him who reported Girkin-Strelkov to the authorities.

Does he imply that Russian prosecutor's office had no clue about Girkin-Strelkov before his statement?
