It’s 5 o’clock somewhere! (Kiev, actually)

Historical recipes can be fascinating, and so is the history of the cocktail. Just as Glen of “Glen and Friends” on YouTube has an “Old Cookbook Show” Sunday mornings, he has a show called “Cocktails After Dark” that could equally well be called the Old Cocktail Book show. Today, I’d like to present a few of these, along with some hors d'oeuvres.

1900: Rum Milk Punch

I love cocktails. My specialty drink is a gimlet with a little egg white in it so it gets frothy. I really like rose water - sometimes I'll add it to champagne. Christina Hendricks

Angels on Horseback

A Victorian hors d’œuvre that has died a death in recent decades; an angel on horseback is simply an oyster wrapped in bacon and grilled; a devil is a tea-soaked prune treated the same way…. They should have a comeback as they are delicious…. britishfoodhistory.com/...

1914: Riding Club Cocktail

I like to set up bars at my parties so people can make their own cocktails and mix and match and teach each other different things. Jeremiah Brent

Pigs in a Blanket

Did you know that pigs-in-a-blanket may be as old as the 1600’s? Despite rumors that it is an invention as modern as 1957, field laborers in the England of the 1600’s had what was essentially the same dish. Putting meat inside of dough was an obvious solution for a quick and nourishing meal on the go. foodimentary.com/...

1934: Fluffy Ruffles

Festive cocktails mean color, lots of color. Danny Meyer

Tomato Bruschetta

Bruschetta also has a long and I would say noble history. Regardless of whether it dates back to the Etruscans or the Ancient Romans, as some purport, one thing is certain: for centuries it fed laborers and farmers with days’ old bread. It served both as a hearty snack or meal for those doing hard manual labor, and as a way to salvage bread that had gone stale. www.theinternationalkitchen.com/...

1951: Arnaud’s

This cocktail was found in the old cocktail book Ted Saucier's Bottoms Up published in 1951. It was contributed by Arnaud's Restaurant in New Orleans. From the YouTube description

Deviled Eggs

The deviled egg we know today can be traced back to ancient Rome, where boiled eggs were seasoned with spicy sauces and served as the starter of a fancy meal usually made for guests. Serving eggs while entertaining guests was so common for wealthy Romans that they even had a saying for it, “ab ova usque ad mala” meaning “from eggs to apples”, or from the beginning of a meal to the end. ncegg.org/...
