It's a Great Day to Talk to My Neighbors:" Knocking on Doors in Michigan & Wisconsin [1]

Despite the sweltering heat in the southern part of the United States, canvassers in Michigan and Wisconsin started off our pre-canvass trainings in the high 60s and low 70s. In Michigan, they ended in the lower 70s (in Wisconsin, it did get above 75°)! And air quality wasn’t a factor, so a pretty good day to be out talking to their neighbors. In Michigan, we had volunteers come in ready to knock on doors because they are getting worried about third party entrants and how it will effect the presidential results in Michigan. “I wanted to do something and I choose your group because the whole system resonated with me,” a new volunteer told her organizer. Which is both gratifying and nice to hear.

2024 Senate Battleground Map

Hope Springs from Field PAC volunteers have been knocking on doors in Wisconsin since the beginning but it is our first year in Michigan. I’ll be the first to admit that we step lightly in these two states because the fact is the upper Midwest has incredible state Democratic party orgs. But these are swing states, states with Senate races next year, as well as the one for president. This is our core mission, knocking on doors in Swing States for the senate and presidential races early on, before those candidates would. I remind readers that i like to start off each of these canvassing diaries with the state that has the most volunteers knock that Saturday. Despite the initial struggle in Michigan, it had the highest number last weekend. The weather, no doubt, played its part but so did the reach out from our organizers as well as our systematic approach to appeal to voters. 316 volunteers came out to knock on doors in 12 canvasses in Michigan last Saturday. The grey Congressional Districts (3, 7 & 8) on the map to the right represent most of where we are targeting, but we also knocked on doors in MI-10 and MI-11 on Saturday as well as some minority neighborhoods in the Detroit. We still plan to walk in MI-04 and target that area in the future. Hope Springs volunteers knocked on 22,878 doors last Saturday and talked to 1,576 voters. And this is where it always gets tricky! Our previous highs for volunteers and doors in Michigan had been June 24th, where we had 298 volunteers knock on 21,545 doors. But those 21,545 doors resulted in 1,622 opens or conversations — not quite 50 more than last Saturday. Variation like that is not unusual, but the point is we notice this kind of thing. We track it, we measure it. 999 of those voters (49 voters more than the 6/24, so there’s that!) answered questions to at least part of the Issues Survey. Bouncey bouncey!
