I was lucky to meet Tony Bennet. He was one classy guy. [1]

I used to be a doorman at a very large Native American Casino outside Minneapolis. It was a great job with excellent tips and also featured meeting all the celebrity acts that performed there. (Two exceptions — Bill Cosby and Suzanne Summers didn’t want to come through the public door. They went in through the basement I know, right?) I got to meet and chat with many cool celebrities — Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Paul Anka, and Penn and Teller to name drop a few.

But no one was cooler than Tony. He zipped in around noon and I caught a glimpse of him. I was with another guest and was dismayed that I missed him. Around 1:00, I was just standing there and looked to my left, and there he was. Alone, just him and I. I greeted Mr. Bennet and shook his hand, told him what a big fan I was, and asked if I could help him with anything. He said “Yes can you call for the shuttle bus to take me to the gym?” He had a tennis racket with him. Our gym was about a mile away on a sprawling campus. I told him I would be happy to call a limo to take him but he declined, preferring to get there the same way anybody else did. I wired for the shuttle bus right away.

He then asked me all about me — my name, how long I lived in Minnesota, if I had a family, where I liked to eat nearby. I didn’t fanboy out on him, nor did I ask for his autograph which was strictly forbidden anyway. I had asked him about what I found out at our box office that morning — he only sold about 2/3rds of the tickets for his show that night. He smiled and winked at me and said “I’ll make a promise to you and myself — I will sell out this show.” The shuttle bus arrived and a living legend stepped in, surprising anyone in it, I’m sure.

Fast forward to early evening and I was done with my shift. As I was walking through the Casino, I see a thick knot of people in an unusual spot, and there he was dressed to the nines right in the middle of it. He was signing autographs and being his charming self.

He sold it out. I saw him in the morning and he called me by name and said “Told ya!”
