A Sincere Thank-You to Michigan Attorney General Nessel and Her Team [1]

Having written a number of posts on the topic of the Jan. 6 investigations, which fall into one of two categories, either criticizing the DOJ for their terrible performance, or occasionally, offering due congratulations when a positive milestone is reached (such as the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys convictions), it is with genuine gratitude, and simply relief, that I take a moment now to say thank you to the Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel, and her team, for achieving by far the best news in this saga yet: criminal charges against sixteen fake electors from the state of Michigan.
I’m going to keep this post brief. I will mainly re-iterate, again, the simple and immense relief I feel, and I know many others do as well, of seeing law enforcement finally take action against these people who tried to overthrow our election. Stalling is not ok. Dazzlingly-intellectual arguments about building “the perfect case” are not justifiable, not when all support from the facts has been lost. Our freedom was directly assaulted by a network of people who tried to put us under an un-elected dictator. Finally, finally, someone in law enforcement has lived up to the responsibility of their office to hold some of these people accountable.
I will make one point about timing.
In earlier DailyKos coverage of this event, one of the commenters, Rob Zuber, said:
It should be mentioned that [the Michigan AG’s office] referred this matter to the DOJ, then took it back because the DOJ was not doing anything. [Emphasis original]
That comment seemed consistent with my recollection, but I had to go and look into it again. It seems the comment is justified. From CNN, Jan. 6, 2023:
Michigan attorney general re-opens criminal probe into fake electors for Trump
One quote from the article will suffice:
Nessel, a Democrat who previously referred the matter to federal prosecutors, told reporters that she is “a little worried” that more than a year has passed since she referred cases related to the false slates of electors to the Justice Department and believes there is “clear evidence” to support charges against the fake electors from Michigan.
And now here she is, not only bringing charges sooner than the DOJ, but doing so after waiting a year for them to do it, and then taking the case back.
The bottom line
The take-away the progressive community needs to have here is that if it quacks like a duck, at some point you do need to assume it’s a duck and act accordingly.
Complete lack of any evidence of any progress whatsoever is not evidence the perfect case is being built behind the scenes. While that might theoretically be possible (in the sense that Manhattan being stampeded tomorrow by a herd of angry zebras is also theoretically possible), at some point, you need to discard unlikely possibilities and make the most likely assumption based on the evidence in front of you: the DOJ stalled this case unforgivably.
With that said, it is now also believed that Donald Trump has been given a target letter by Jack Smith’s office related to the Jan. 6 investigation. Hopefully this will lead to accountability for Trump and the other conspirators. We will see.
In any event: Thank you, very much, Attorney General Nessel, for executing your office faithfully, and it would appear promptly considering the chain of events, to protect the interests of the citizens of Michigan and the entire country. Myself and I know many others, greatly appreciate what you have done, and no doubt the work you continue to do on this matter.
