Write On! Sneaking + Your Favorite Preposition [1]

Welcome to our Thursday night diary on writing! Whatever it is you write, pull up a chair, grab a cool drink, and let’s talk writing.
I have to say, this summer, time has an elastic quality. Days drag, but the weeks fly by, and just like that, we’re approaching the tail end of July. I laughed last week at a radio commercial that claimed summer was winding down. Tell that to the folks in the southern half of the continent. But, as of tonight, July is nearly two-thirds over. Whether or not that counts as ‘winding down’, I leave it to you.
My friends and family are approaching their pre-pandemic levels of activity, and perhaps that’s part of the time dilation. Lots of activity, then back to home. Canadian wildfire smoke, then humidity and hail. Rush outside and marvel at the weather/air quality when it’s nice. Crunch through work, and then really take time off.
Writing, though I meant to write every day in July, hasn’t really happened.
July, writing-wise, is sneaking past me. But no! Now I have my eye on it — I’ll catch the tail end if it’s the last thing I do!
Challenge for tonight: since this diary snuck up on me, let’s write about sneaking. Raise some stakes, accelerate a plot point by putting your characters in a situation where they want to remain unnoticed. But can they?
Pick a phrase from the box, add your stock characters, and write a scene of 250-300 words. Make up your own sneaking phrase if you wish. Like SenSho always told us, evoke at least three senses.
sneaking past the enemy camp
sneaking into the antagonist’s study
sneaking away from a fight
sneaking around a gatekeeping figure
