Thursday GNR: Are We Having Fun Yet? [1]

Yes, there are still too many paskudnyaks about, but I find that they are sufficiently reduced so that we can enjoy our continued fight for the rights of all, including them. We can point and laugh. We can use their shenanigans in our political ads, and thank them for constantly outing themselves. We still have to fight them in the legislatures and the courts and the media and everywhere else available, but we can and do enjoy being in a solid and growing majority, and gaining important victories every day.
And, of course,
Cry harder!
So that we can sing!
And dance, like gnus out on the veldt with ten thousand close friends.

SCOTUS Ethics
Senate Democrats announce vote to advance Supreme Court ethics bill A key committee will vote on the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act this month. “Since the Court won’t act, Congress will," Democratic sponsors said. Yes, we know that it will have no chance in the House in this session. We are putting down a marker for 2025, along with lots of other markers. Ohio Ballot Measures

We must be clear. The Ultra-MAGA do not want Congress to do them good. They want everybody in the US harmed INCLUDING THEMSELVES. They just want the rest of us harmed much worse. You can see this in Red state governments, which are routinely at the bottom of the listings for every measure of economic and social welfare, especially human rights.
So don’t try to appeal to their self-interest in any normal way.

The Wheels on the Bus Come Off, Come Off
I can’t actually give you all of the bad news from the DeSantis campaign this week.
Losing ground against the I-DJT. Running out of spendable campaign money. Firing staffers. FL health administration vacancies, due to anti-vaxxerism. Malaria. AAA out of FL home and car insurance market. CRT. DEI. Don’t Say Gay. War on Woke. Private DeSantis State Guard losing recruits because it’s “too military”. Roads made with radioactive mining waste. The Mouse that sued. Kidnapping refugees to pwn Blue states, with criminal charges filed in Texas.
Karma, of the most vehement sort, the kind that comes to those who deny that karma applies to them.
As Rachel Maddow highlighted on her show on Monday. And in episode 5 of Deja News: Taken for a Ride, about Southern segregationists busing poor Blacks to Librul cities in 1962. Even most Southern Whites considered that to be too cruel. It had to be not just abandoned, but memory-holed.

Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 to channel his racism, misogyny, and hatred of Millennials, now extended to Gen Z.
The ads write themselves. No, it’s better than that. We can just continue to use their videos as our ads, as with MTG above.
The Turning Point Action Conference is one of the regular Wrong-Wing Cognitive-Dissonance-fests which begin from the premise that all of Trump’s losses and all of the evidence that he is a losing loser and they are a shrinking minority are Fake News.
Earlier this week Trump challenger Asa Hutchinson was greeted with boos and chants of “We Want Trump” and “Trump, Trump, Trump”.

AG Lynn Fitch wants to make info on out-of-state abortions available to Mississippi authorities
Fitch, Mississippi’s first-term Republican attorney general, and 18 other state attorneys general have filed comments in opposition to a proposed change to federal regulations, known as HIPAA, that protects the privacy of people’s health care. Under the rule change proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services, state agencies would not be able to glean information on an abortion performed in a state where abortion is legal. For instance, if a woman from Mississippi, where abortion is illegal in most instances, traveled to a state where abortions are allowed to receive the procedure, a Mississippi law enforcement agency would not be able to gather information on the procedure under the proposed rule.

We Just Got The First Evidence of Two Planets Sharing The Same Orbit
The system in which the discovery was made is already famous: PDS-70. It was here that we saw, for the first time, direct images of not just one but two exoplanets in the process of forming, baby gas giants named PDS-70b and PDS-70c. Here, too, astronomers found evidence of a moon-forming disk around one of the proto-exoplanets, PDS-70c. Now, a closer look has revealed evidence of something – a blob fainter than the exoplanet – sharing the orbit of PDS-70b. Calculations suggest that whatever it is has up to around twice the mass of Earth's Moon. And while that blob isn't a planet – yet – researchers are excited about its location.
Sixth HIV Patient Declared in Remission "Will Need to Be Watched Closely"
A man dubbed the "Geneva patient" is the latest person with HIV to be declared in long-term remission – however he did not receive a transplant with a virus-blocking gene mutation like previous cases, researchers said Thursday.
He received a stem-cell transplant, but unlike the previous five cases, it was not from a donor with the CCR5 mutation.

x Maybe ask the WHO? "All children diagnosed with measles should receive two doses of vitamin A supplements, given 24 hours apart. This restores low vitamin A levels ... Vitamin A supplements may also reduce the number of measles deaths.
https://t.co/zEQWMQruqf — Squirrel Patrick (@PatrickSquirrel) July 16, 2023
Yes.
Vitamin A for treating measles in children
The evidence suggests that vitamin A in a single dose was not associated with a reduced risk of mortality. However, two doses of vitamin A (200,000 international units (IUs) on consecutive days) reduced the mortality in children aged less than two years (RR 0.21; 95% CI 0.07 to 0.66) and pneumonia‐specific mortality (RR 0.57; 95% CI 0.24 to 1.37). Two doses of vitamin A reduced the incidence of croup (RR 0.53; 95% CI 0.29 to 0.89) but not pneumonia morbidity (RR 0.92; 95% CI 0.69 to 1.22), nor diarrhea morbidity (RR 0.80; 95% CI 0.27 to 2.34).
RR is Relative Risk.
