Climate Crisis: Rainwater harvesting for resilience [1]

Harvesting rain from roofs and hard surfaces to store in tanks or the soil can be a good way to prepare for dry periods. The soil is the best place to store water if the goal is growing plants. If the goal is to prepare for potential loss of drinking, cooking, and bathing water, tanks are a good but often expensive option. We have several large tanks and a small one, with a combined storage capacity of about 11,000 gallons. We recently completed a project of connecting two of the large tanks to the gutters of our new shop building and carport. Unfortunately, we don’t expect rain any time soon. We’re in the middle of a heatwave and severe drought.

Storing rain in the soil with rain harvesting earthworks helps to restore the water table, allowing trees and other plants to flourish. We have a few earthworks on our place and plan many more. We live on 20 acres, but even small yards can benefit from little basins and swales. With enough earthworks, land can be made nearly drought and flood proof.
