Daily Bucket - A passion expanded, observing Woodpeckers. [1]

My interest in Woodpeckers intensified when the wife and I bought our home in 2005. 300 feet from my front door was the home (with occupant) of the Red-headed Woodpecker pictured above. I was nearing the end of my career as a Land Surveyor (after 27 years in the field) where Woodpeckers had been incidental characters of my daily work. It was comforting to know I’d see old friends on a daily basis.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. I got the opportunity to observe the daily habits of that family and begin to notice the other species that visited regularly. The Downy, Red-breasted, Pileated Woodpeckers and Northern Flicker became common sights. As I learned more, I found that the Hairy and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were also here. There was also the chance to witness the “bird of lore” from my 1980’s Forestry classes, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. I became obsessed with the little “hammer-heads”.

When I started working with hay seed in 2011, his interest in photography urged me to capture some of the wonderful behavior I was seeing and share those moments with others. It was 2019 when I was introduced to Dkos and had a platform to present my film fare.
