The Essence of Human Autonomy [1]

When I consider the wonder of Shakespeare, I am struck by the character of his genius. He not only was able to strip away the affectations of human life and uncover the essential nature of what it means to be human but also to present his “findings” in an entertaining and palpable way to anyone who had the willingness and desire to listen.

From birth, we are subjected to an entire litany of beliefs, ideas, notions, and conventions of thought and behavior that help shape an intricate web of illusions that construct a decidedly delusional representation of reality. It is through the process of maturation and growth that many opportunities are presented to individuals through life’s brief span of years to recognize the underlying nature of existence and tease away the intricate layers of falsehoods and misdirection that characterize so much of what is represented as real.

As sentient creatures, we are not automatons relegated to accommodating without question the decidedly false reality that is presented to us. Time is unrelenting in its forward movement and the cosmos of which we are an infinitesimal part is wondrous and all-encompassing.

We have the capacity to live a rich and fulfilling life that embraces integrity and to develop and grow as truly autonomous beings with our eyes wide open. We have the capacity to fully embrace humanity in all its manifestations and the natural world that surrounds us. Furthermore, we can shape an entirely different future more congruent with the real nature of reality - free of all the contrivances burdened by erroneous and patently false conclusions.
