Not a very long diary, but Ron “Small Man in White Boots in Search of a Balcony” DeSantis did an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that was posted today. DeSantis barely comes off better than he has in Fox interviews, he’s still got that whiny voice and wacky head bob thing going, but a couple of points of interest:
He claims most people can’t define “woke”, though he also claims he has. Tapper didn’t press him to define it.
DeSantis goes all in on the right wing “they’re weaponizing the legal system” reaction to potential charges against Trump for January 6. To his credit, Tapper pushes back some, but DeSantis dodges the question.
A lot of the interview is spent dealing with “woke” in the military, and again, Tapper fails to pin DeSantis down on what “woke” means or related issues
Without foundation, DeSantis claims that some liberal states have legalized “post birth abortions”, and he doesn’t elaborate. He does claim with a straight face that he’s a pro-life governor — can we talk about how many Floridians died needlessly of COVID-19 due to his policies? He dodges the question on whether he would be for a national six week abortion ban, but says he would do something about “abortion tourism”
On Ukraine, DeSantis indicates that it isn’t a primary concern for the US — he’s more concerned with China as a threat than Russia (like Gomer used to say, “surprise surprise surprise!” that he doesn’t see Putin as anything other than a secondary threat), and gives a muddled answer that implies it’s the Europeans’ responsibility but we’ll “pull some levers”.
He says he will reinstate the ban on transgendered people serving in the military. There’s a lot of latter day Phyllis Schlafly style concerns about bathrooms along with the tried and true “protecting women’s sports” angle. This is one thing Tapper seemed to be a tiny bit (though very) assertive on.
DeSantis actually made a pudding reference, though it was without irony or self-deprecation, “the proof is in the pudding”.
Disney doesn’t come up in the interview other than a passing mention. It might have been useful for Tapper to push DeSantis on why he’s so obsessed with Disney, whether his response to Bob Chapek and Bob Iger is retaliation for them and Disney exercising their free speech rights, and whether he thinks it’s appropriate for the government to retaliate against a person or a company for taking a political or social position where they disagree with the government., Neither do book bans, drag show bans, failure to condemn Nazis, or other culture war issues came up. Tapper could have, and should have, pushed back more.
Here’s the interview with Sunshine State Schicklgruber in all its glory:
