Good evening, Kibitzers!
You’ll recall, I’m sure, that I’ve traded nights with Zen Trainer so she could get something taken care of. You’ll see her here tomorrow. (I have taken my best shot at providing life-giving puppy images to tide you over; see below the fold.)
I’m here to report that Boston has not washed away; I hope the same can be said of the rest of New England and New York State. I know that those of you with heat and drought still have those miserable conditions; I hope the threat of dry lightning in California (or elsewhere) has not come to fruition. Please let us know how you’re doing! It seems like everywhere is kind of dicey at best nowadays.
That’s enough doom! Onward to puppies and other assorted topics!
* A “shaggy dog story” is “an extremely long-winded anecdote characterized by extensive narration of typically irrelevant incidents and terminated by an anticlimax.”
Since, unlike Zen Trainer, I have no cute puppies to feature in this diary, here is Steve Carell, participating in a BuzzFeed feature in which celebrities answer fan questions while playing with puppies. [11:12]
The folks at Minute Earth undertake to represent energy consumption in a standard and easily-grasped unit: potatoes. It’s an eye-opening little video. For those interested in learning more, there are notes below the video to get you started fruitfully googling. [3:08]
Condé Nast Traveler magazine has a YouTube series called Going Places, in which celebrities give you the flavor of the place they’re from. Here, actor Sam Heughan from Outlander provides a look at Scotland. [12:30]
For everyone dreaming of ice, ice dancers Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz show off their routine to the Ike & Tina Turner Proud Mary, at their practice rink. [2:58]
Elle Simone at America's Test Kitchen makes a super-easy fudge sauce for ice cream that looks much better than stuff you buy. Note that they are careful not to call it "hot fudge". It is, however, hot-fudge-adjacent, and it's quick and simple to make and requires no cooking to "soft-ball" temperature. I honestly looked at a genuine and fabulous hot fudge recipe for here, but when I got to the part where you stir it for 50 minutes, I was like, no one's doing that. [4:20]
A CCTV camera in the Netherlands captures other farm animals racing to the rescue when a hawk attempts to snatch a chicken. It’s good to have friends! (Includes slo-mo replays!) [0:42]
Children's book author/illustrator Kevan Atteberry confesses to having created Microsoft Office 97's notorious "Clippy". He meant no harm! [4:34]
Joe Scott of the YouTube channel Answers with Joe takes a look at discoveries made in the first year of JWST's operation, which ended less than a week ago on July 12. [15:14]
The snarky guy at the You Suck at Cooking channel starts at the BLT and creates an LGBTQ+ sandwich, which actually looks pretty good. [4:01]
This homeowner was not at home in Linneus, MO, when an EF-2 tornado went past a couple of miles away, back in May. But the wifi and Ring doorbell camera had battery backup, so he found himself watching on his phone. I will tell you that there is not a big denouement -- the car doesn't blow away, nor does the house fall down, so there's no particular reason to sit through all 7 minutes. It is certainly dramatic, however. The beginning looks bad, but by about four minutes in, it's total chaos. It’s fair to skip ahead! [7:02]
The 1943 movie Stormy Weather had an all-Black cast, and at the time, this was good because lead roles, or even non-servant roles, in "regular" (i.e. white people) movies were very hard for Black actors to get. Lena Horne and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson star in the musical. This video is a performance by Cab Calloway & his Orchestra, with the Nicholas Brothers dancing. If you have not seen the Nicholas Brothers, you really should. [4:47]
Everyone needs a nice calm place to sit sometimes. Here are ten hours of a peaceful summer picnic on a lakeside blanket, with refreshments and birdsong. I am certain it’s a pleasant temperature and there are no bugs (unless you want bugs! Scientists interested in bugs may summon them.) [10 hours]
Evidently, all the parodists except Don Caron at The Parody Project are on vacation. His newest work takes the tune of Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh’s Witchcraft, made famous by Sinatra. [2:57]
Have you had a tolerable Monday?
