In a show of grassroots support Boebert's Democratic challenger outraises her 3 to 1 [1]

In the closest 2022 US House race, Lauren Boebert barely won reelection by 546 votes, down from her comfortable 2020 margin of 24,604. Her eyelash-narrow win over Democrat Adam Frisch is rendered even more flimsy as redistricting after the 2020 census had favored her by making her district more conservative . And although Republicans failed to realize a red wave in the 2022 midterms, they still did better than in 2020, while Boebert did not.

She will face off against Frisch again in the 2024 elections. And this time, she is way behind in fundraising. In 2022, she ended up with a $1.1 million cash advantage over Frisch ($7.9M to $6.7M). But in the second quarter of 2023, Frisch outraised Boebert for the second quarter in a row, bringing in $2.6 million from April through June, more than three times the incumbent’s $818,000.

Boebert reacted to this sobering news with a mixture of lies, bravado, and more lies. She went straight to smearing Frisch as a tool of out-of-state interests. An anonymous campaign spokesman offered this (with the obligatory name-calling):

“Aspen Adam will learn he and his out-of-state Democrat cronies can’t buy this seat, no matter how hard they try. Rural Colorado knows his liberal politics are bad for us and bad for the country.”

It is a political reality that candidates get funding from afar — there is no law against it. It is also true that Frisch received 33.7% of his cash from out of state. However, Boebert’s mouthpiece did not mention that Baretta Barbie received an even larger share (39.1%) of her money from out-of-staters.

Were these people raised to think lying was morally acceptable — or was there a moment when they decided that sin was not a sin if they claimed to be born-again Christians? Either way, they talk and behave in ways that make an atheist blush.

Frisch’s campaign was not taking Boebert's lies sitting down. In an email issued hours after Boebert had posted her small campaign haul, they spanked Boebert for her fundraising failure.

“Lauren Boebert is PANICKING. Brand-new fundraising reports filed today with the FEC show that Adam Frisch just massively out-raised Lauren Boebert again – without one dime from corporate PACs.”

Unlike the blatantly dishonest Boebert, Frisch is correct that he has received no money from corporate PACs - while Lauren scored $106,000 from businesses. In addition, small donors (i.e. people giving less than $200) accounted for c.2/3rds of Frisch’s cash , while less than 50% of Boebert’s haul was from grassroots donors.

Far more Coloradans think that Frisch represents their interests than Boebert does. This reality will not stop her from spouting the usual conservative bullshit that Republicans represent average Americans. Boebert’s support is 2/3rds from vested interests, which do not give a damn about the citizens, and 1/3rd from the lunatic fringe, who think they are the only real Americans.

A sophisticated politician would be chastened by the narrowness of their last victory and the clear message sent by regular voters. However, Boebert does not do self-reflection, is incapable of taking moral inventory, and will not change. So while I cannot say that she will lose in 2024, I would not bet on her winning — no matter the odds.
