Climate Crisis: Levels of Resilience [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

To prepare for the changes we’re facing from climate change, I’m trying make our household resilient on several levels. The levels I’ve devised are:

MODERN: Grid power, tap water, food from the grocery store, gas automobile

FUTURE: Photovoltaic power, harvested rain water or well water drawn by solar pump, homegrown, local, and regional food, electric automobile, permaculture design

CAVEMAN: The power of fire, homegrown or hunted and foraged food, rain water or river water, foot transport

MAD MAX: Guns and hoarding

These levels overlap to a greater or lesser extent. Our household is somewhere between Modern and Future. We use grid power, get our water from a well, and most of our food from the store, but we recently purchased an electric car, and we do grow some of our own food. We’re improving our permaculture design with better rain harvesting and a better garden plan. And we plan to add photovoltaic early next year. No one in this household can survive Caveman level for anything longer than short periods (such as grid power outage) because we depend on modern medications. I’m not bothering with Mad Max level.
