OK, even after 40 years in Phoenix and Las Vegas, I have to admit, it’s freakin’ Hot!

Not totally out of the ordinary, Las Vegas official record high is 117 on numerous occasions. And it’s not unusual to have several days in late June or early July in the mid teens. But it is unusual to have so many in a row. Even weirder is the complete lack of anything resembling the late summer Monsoon thunder showers that usually start around the 4th.

Monsoon primer : The annual Monsoon season and events pick up in early July when an annual Summer high pressure system settles in over the Texas Panhandle. This clockwise system brings moist air off the Gulf across Mexico toward NM and AZ. The second necessary component is a counter-clockwise low pressure system in the Pacific off Baja which sweeps moist air also across Mexico into NM and Arizona. When the two mesh like gears, Tucson, Phoenix and (less so) Southern Nevada can get massive lightning storms from the Southeast.

About Temperature averages and extremes : It is interesting that the average daily highs of late June and early July are similar — 104 -105. But the part commonly overlooked is the standard deviation. Low std dev in June, sunny and hot, few clouds. July, when the humidity starts climbing toward Monsoons the std dev goes up as we cycle between dry hot days and days with lower temps and rainstorms. Ironically, this year June was unusually cool (less warm) but dry, and now, July is hot and dry, which may result in the hottest July on record with no Monsoon to offset the hot days. Of note, we monitor the dew point very closely. Most meteorologists define the beginning of Monsoon season as three consecutive days of the dew point >55. In other words, if your beer sweats and suddenly needs a coaster, look out for rain.

Enuf analysis. It was 118 on the shaded patio today, a mile from NLV airport which had 116 officially. Las Vegas Harry Reid Airport oddly is not reporting as I write this. The closest dependable station reports 119. Below are some screen grabs of temps around town. Open in new tab or download and open in image app to see more detail.
