Opinion With our food systems on the verge of collapse, it’s the plutocrats v life on Earth George Monbiot Climate breakdown and crop losses threaten our survival, but the ultra-rich find ever more creative ways to maintain the status quo . Climate disruption: Volcanoes However, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported that the plume reached only 8 kilometres above sea level. If the plume reached 20 kilometres high, it may have penetrated the stratosphere, which could have consequences for the global climate. 3 days ago Shiveluch volcano eruption in Russia smothers nearby villages in ash The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, for example, sent an ash cloud 19 kilometres into the atmosphere. It cooled Earth’s surface for three years following the eruption, by as much as 0.7°C at its peak impact, according to US Geological Survey. . Volcanism Volcanic ash eruptions inject particles into Earth’s atmosphere. Substantial eruptions of light-reflecting particles can reduce temperatures and even affect atmospheric circulation. Large eruptions impact climate patterns for years. A massive eruption of the Tambora Volcano in Indonesia in 1815, for instance, earned 1816 the nickname “the year without a summer.” Shiveluch is a stratovolcano—a steep-sloped volcano composed of alternating layers of solidified ash, hardened lava, and volcanic rocks. One of Kamchatka’s largest volcanoes, it sports a summit reaching 3,283 meters (10,771 feet). Shiveluch is also one of the peninsula’s most active volcanoes, with an estimated 60 substantial eruptions in the past 10,000 years. NASA image courtesy the MODIS Rapid Response Team at NASA GSFC. Tonga Eruption May Temporarily Push Earth Closer to 1.5°C of Warming
The underwater eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha‘apai sent megatons of water vapor into the stratosphere, contributing to an increase in global warming over the next 5 years.
