Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the frontline on July 14 and reportedly made gains in some areas. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations in the Bakhmut, Melitopol (western Zaporizhia Oblast), and Berdyansk (Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area) directions. [19] The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces achieved partial success in the Bila Hora-Andriivka direction (9-15km southwest of Bakhmut). [20] Ukrainian Deputy Director of the Department of Application Planning of the Main Directorate of the Ukrainian National Guard Colonel Mykola Urshalovych stated that Ukrainian forces have advanced over 1,700 meters in unspecified places in the Melitopol direction. [21] Russian milbloggers claimed that Ukrainian forces achieved a localized breakthrough of Russian defensive lines north of Pryyutne (15km southwest of Velyka Novosilka). “The assumption that this would be a war between a big Soviet army and a small Soviet army was wrong in many countries,” Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said. “That’s why they told us that Kyiv would fall in three days and Ukraine in three weeks. But this is no longer a Soviet army.” But if it were up to Zaluzhny alone, this is not how he would get the job done. He would fight with air superiority. He would fire back at least as many shells as the Russians are firing at his troops. And he would have cruise missiles that could match Moscow’s. Instead, modern fighter jets, such as the U.S.-made F-16, are not expected on the battlefield until next year. Ukraine’s ammunition supply is constrained, with the Russians often shooting three times as much in a day. And Western allies, citing fears of escalating the war with Russia, have placed a condition on the longer-range missiles and other materiel they’ve so far provided: They can’t be used to strike Russian soil. So, Zaluzhny said, he uses weapons made in Ukraine for the frequent strikes across the border that Kyiv never officially acknowledges as its own. “To save my people, why do I have to ask someone for permission what to do on enemy territory?” Zaluzhny recently told The Washington Post in a rare interview. “For some reason, I have to think that I’m not allowed to do anything there. Why? Because [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will … use nuclear weapons? The kids who are dying don’t care. “This is our problem, and it is up to us to decide how to kill this enemy. It is possible and necessary to kill on his territory in a war. If our partners are afraid to use their weapons, we will kill with our own. But only as much as is necessary.” www.washingtonpost.com/... x “Victory will be when we will have an army…that will guarantee the safety of children who are now riding in baby carriages, so that they grow up knowing that this won’t happen again.” An interview with the finest military leader of the 21st century.https://t.co/n3hFlgNQaY — Mick Ryan, AM (@WarintheFuture) July 14, 2023

The latest: The Ukrainian military has launched a long-anticipated counteroffensive against occupying Russian forces, opening a crucial phase in the war aimed at restoring Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and preserving Western support in its fight against Moscow. The fight: Ukrainian troops have intensified their attacks on the front line in the southeast region, according to multiple individuals in the country’s armed forces, in a significant push toward Russian-occupied territory. The front line: The Washington Post has mapped out the 600-mile front line between Ukrainian and Russian forces. Key Takeaways: Russian President Vladimir Putin further indicated he intends to maintain the Wagner Group as a cohesive fighting force rather than breaking it up but seeks to separate Wagner Financier Yevgeny Prigozhin from Wagner leadership and forces. Recently, the Wagner Group finished transferring all of the equipment that they promised to give up, conditional on the peaceful resolution of the conflict. The Wagner coup is still considered a mystery, as it is unclear whether Wagner’s troops gradually changed their mind, seeing no physical support for their actions from the regular forces, or whether it was entirely something else. But one thing is clear – those generals that were on good terms with Prigozhin were further alienated and discarded, such as the former commander of the entire so-called special military operation, Surovikin. Some sources speculate that he betrayed the Russian Ministry of Defense by secretly supporting Wagner and hoping to become the Minister of Defense. Other sources take a milder view by assuming that the Russian Ministry of Defense cannot take risks and trust anyone who is in any way affiliated with the Wagner Group. The bottom line is clear – Surovikin disappeared from the public eye, currently, he does not represent the Russian Air Force, and all people who know him closely unconvincingly say that he is on vacation. I remind you that Surovikin is the only commander of the so-called special military operation that actually achieved some results. So far, everything indicates that his vacation is going to be perpetual.

Belarusian government and independent sources confirmed on July 14 that Wagner Group instructors previously deployed in Africa previously arrived at training grounds in Belarus.

Former 58th Combined Arms Army Commander Major General Ivan Popov’s dismissal continues to generate pronounced ire against the Russian military command and the Russian civilian leadership.

Susan Vermazen @SusanVermazen From my cousin, Professor Emeritus of RussianThe George Washington University Ex-KGB agent Sergei Zhirnov, in an interview on the Ukrainian YouTube channel Seichás said yesterday that Prigozhin is dead. Zhirnov’s version: Putin set up a series of special operations to dispose of Prigozhin. He convinced the Wagnerites to lay down their heavy heavy weapons. They allowed Prigozhin free passage practically anyway. But the meeting between Putin and Progozhin that Peskov loudly reported on never took place. There would have been nowhere for it to take place because Progozhin would not agree to meet Putin unarmed and Putin would never accept a meeting with an armed Progozhin. Instead, Prigozhin and his immediately staff was arrested quietly and hustled off to a torture chamber, where they were forced to open up their phones so that the FSB now had control of the messaging system to the troops and political allies. That led to the hunt for all the underlings who might have been Prigozhin abettors. Meanwhile the Kremlin made sure that everyone picked up the story of Prigozhin’s previous (and now ongoing?) battles with cancer. That sets the stage for an announcement a few weeks or months from now that Prigozhin died of cancer. He can be given a full military burial and then forgotten. x From my cousin, Professor Emeritus of Russian
