Good News Roundup for Friday, July 14, 2023: They're Only Pretending to Be Powerful [1]

Welcome đť to Fridayâs Roundup of Good News!
The other side is often much weaker than it pretends to be. Now, they can still cause a lot of damage, and some of them are nasty bullies and some of them have weapons. But here are just a few instances that Iâm recalling (sorry for not supplying links):
Putin, when someone marched on Moscow, negotiated.
Several state GOP groups are broke. Like, no money. Here are the ones we know about (Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota). Is it because of theft? Mismanagement? No donors? All the GOP people sending their money to tRump? Or maybe a lack of interest by the American people? And, like I said, maybe itâs even worse than we have heard. It usually is.
We heard, going into the 2022 midterms, that there would be a red wave. Well, there wasnât.
We also keep getting warnings about inflation and recession, but those also seem to be mirages.
The Rs are supposed to be unified (mostly in their hatred of us; itâs true that a common enemy is a unifying force) but there are reports of discord in the Freedumb Caucus and even brawls in other places.
Now, we canât take such weakness for granted. We have to keep up the good work and keep pusing and pulling and making the world a better place. But we canât take the strength for granted, either. They want to intimidate us. Let us refuse to be intimidated, and march forward. Sometimes it will be easier than we expect. And every day, more people are joining us. Sweden. Scientists.
Come on in and see what the good guys are doing, whether theyâre afraid or not! Happy Friday.

No one here is naĂŻve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
đ There are more of us than there are of them.
đ They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
đ They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

đ FDA approves first over-the-counter birth control pill FDA press release
(yesterday) Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill (norgestrel) tablet for nonprescription use to prevent pregnancyâ the first daily oral contraceptive approved for use in the U.S. without a prescription. Approval of this progestin-only oral contraceptive pill provides an option for consumers to purchase oral contraceptive medicine without a prescription at drug stores, convenience stores and grocery stores, as well as online. The timeline for availability and price of this nonprescription product is determined by the manufacturer. Other approved formulations and dosages of other oral contraceptives will remain available by prescription only. âTodayâs approval marks the first time a nonprescription daily oral contraceptive will be an available option for millions of people in the United States,â said Patrizia Cavazzoni, M.D., director of the FDAâs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. âWhen used as directed, daily oral contraception is safe and is expected to be more effective than currently available nonprescription contraceptive methods in preventing unintended pregnancy.â
Red states will fight this, but itâs a step in the right direction.

What Maga fears most Bocha Blue, Palmer Report
And there is one thing in the box that Maga doesnât want you to know about, one thing that has the potential to unravel them. Chris Christie himself spoke about this. Itâs the thing that defines Maga most of all â fear. Maga is so afraid of the world at large; thatâs where all their hate comes from. But there is a new fear eating its way into Magasâ brains. Itâs the fear that their savior â canât win. Indeed, Chris Christie appeared on MSNBC and spoke about this particular fear of Maga. âTheyâre concerned he canât beat Joe Biden,â Christie said. And Christie says many a Maga has confided in him that they might just switch their vote if it becomes apparent Trump canât win. I think that time has come and has been here since the beginning. But it is interesting that some in Maga-world are actually beginning to notice. Christie has been doing a great job tearing Trump a new one. And he is not the only one to whom Maga are confessing their fears of Trump not being able to win.
Turns out âHunter Biden whistleblowerâ has everything wrong with him Liz Dye, Wonkette
Okay, so you know how Comer and his band of dipshits have been hee-hawing for months about their top secret whistleblower? The one who can prove that Hunter Biden and Joe Biden took all the bribes from China? They couldn't produce him because REASONS, and in May our pal Jamie took his big square head over to Fox to tell that big airhead Maria Bartiromo that his informant was lost. "Well, unfortunately we can't track down the informant. We are hopeful that the informant is still there. The whistleblower knows the informant, the whistleblower is very credible," he told the credulous Fox host, who briefly demonstrated signs of mild skepticism, before reverting to form. âď¸ [Note I thought the Rs had just made up everything. But the actual truth is funnier.] Luft is alleged to have conspired to traffic weapons and Iranian oil, in addition to violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). And while the weapons and oil may be more serious from a criminal perspective, Luft's FARA scheme is most interesting politically. âď¸ All the cool kids were doing it â at least the cool kids hanging around with Donald Trump. Sorry for the extended flashback, but we can't help but note that Trump, whose supporters have been screaming nonsense about Biden's supposed ties to China, was being advised by a guy who was literally being paid by a Chinese agent to publish articles praising the CCP.
I guess now that putinâs future is insecure, the GOP is looking to China for assistance.

Hobbs made the announcement from the offices of a central Phoenix nonprofit that focuses on helping LGBTQ youth. đ Unity? đ
This week we have to celebrate the admission of Sweden into NATO and the fact that Erdogan of Turkiye has dropped its objections. Karl Ritter and Andrew Wilks, Associated Press
VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) â Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that Swedenâs NATO membership bid would not be ratified by Turkeyâs parliament before October, but that he hopes for a swift ratification once lawmakers return from a break. Turkey on Monday withdrew its objections to Sweden joining the alliance, a step toward the unity that Western leaders have been eager to demonstrate in the face of Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine. The decision by Erdogan was a significant move toward Swedenâs membership and came after days of intensive meetings. Erdoganâs comments Wednesday were his first public confirmation of his decision to refer Swedenâs membership to parliament, where his party and its allies command a majority.
This is great news on so many fronts. Erdogan, who has been playing both sides, has decided NATO is better than the other side. It means he decided, after a close election, that NATO was more important than Russia. Also, this weakens Putin. It shows, too, that President Biden has made the US a leader once more.
US and EU cooperating on transatlantic data flows Justice Department Press release â the nitty gritty of making things move smoothly
The Justice Department welcomes the European Commissionâs adoption on July 10 of an adequacy decision for the United States as part of the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, to which President Biden and European Commission President von der Leyen agreed in March 2022. The adequacy decision provides a basis in the law of the European Union for transfers of personal data from EU countries to the United States for commercial purposes. This flow of data underpins the $7 trillion-dollar U.S.-EU economic relationship and provides vital benefits to citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, enabling businesses of all sizes to compete in each otherâs markets. The Commissionâs adoption of the adequacy decision also brings into effect the Attorney Generalâs designation of the EU and the three additional countries making up the European Economic Area (EEA) as âqualifying statesâ for purposes of implementing the redress mechanism established in Executive Order 14086. A country or a regional economic integration organization may be designated a âqualifying stateâ by the Attorney General if he determines, in consultation with the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Commerce, and the Director of National Intelligence, that it meets the requirements set forth in the executive order. That determination was made on June 30 for the EU/EEA, contingent upon the Commissionâs adoption of an adequacy decision.

DOJ appealing sentences given to Oath Keepers Katelyn Polantz, Hannah Rabinowitz CNN
CNN â The Justice Department is appealing the sentences that eight convicted defendants tied to the Oath Keepers received for seditious conspiracy or other conspiracy charges related to their roles in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Federal prosecutors working on the cases of Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes and others filed court papers Wednesday saying they are appealing the sentences set by a judge in late May. Some of the Oath Keepers who were sentenced had already filed their own appeals. âď¸ For instance, Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Rhodes to 18 years in prison. Yet prosecutors had sought 25 years. Kelly Meggs, the leader of the Florida contingent of the group, received from Mehta a 12-year sentence, though prosecutors had sought 21 years. Meggsâ sentence is among those being appealed as well.
To be clear, the DOJ wants longer sentences, not less time. This shows how seriously the DOJ is taking the attempt to do a coup and also makes it easier to give tRump some prison time. Here it is in a tweet:
x The solicitor general has to give her permission for a govt's appeal like this. Sentencing appeals are unusual (judges have considerable discretion) & while the govt can object to procedural or substantive flaws at sentencing, the cases are hard to win. Strong sign DOJ wantsâŚ

NEW YORK (AP) â Former President Donald Trump lashed out on social media against the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday after it stopped supporting his claim that the presidency shields him from liability against a defamation lawsuit brought by a woman who says he sexually attacked her in the mid-1990s. Trump said in a post on his social media platform that the departmentâs reversal a day earlier in the lawsuit brought by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll was part of the âpolitical Witch Huntâ he faces while campaigning for the presidency as a Republican. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

đŁ Letâs Honor Truth âď¸ď¸
One reason truth has had such a tough time has been because of the copious lies being promoted by FOX, the GOP, RWNJs, tRump, etc. A way to fight these lies is through defamation lawsuits, such as the lawuit being filed by Ray Epps (who was a tRump supporter) Jeremy Barr, Will Sommer Washington Post
Fox News, which recently settled two separate high-profile legal challenges for approximately $800 million, is now facing a defamation and false-light lawsuit from a man who said the network presented him as a âscapegoatâ for the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Ray Epps attended the pro-Trump rallies in Washington in January 2021 but was not among the people found to have breached the Capitol building and has not been charged for his conduct. In subsequent weeks, then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson highlighted a video clip of the Arizona man outside the Capitol to suggest that Epps might have been a government informant â a notion that Epps and the FBI have strongly denied. âď¸ The video of Epps, combined with the fact that he wasnât prosecuted and his photo vanished from the FBI site, became fodder for right-wing conspiracy theorists, who claimed he was planted on the scene by federal agents to provoke otherwise peaceful protesters into committing violence, a notion that trickled into conservative media channels. Carlson began regularly questioning whether Epps was an informant or undercover figure on his broadcasts, describing him as someone who âhelped stage-manage the insurrectionâ in one January 2022 broadcast.
Thereâs more: Epps and his wife have received death threats and have had to leave their home and their business and flee from Arizona. Real damages to this guy.
But this is not the only recent defamation lawsuit. Thereâs the Dominion lawsuit against Fox, which settled for 787.5 million. Thereâs the Smartmatic lawsuit that hasnât happened yet. Thereâs E Jean Carroll, who sued tRump and won (and is suing him again, and the DOJ just stated it wonât defend him). There are Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman, election workers who are suiing Rudy Giuliani for defamation after their liees were turned hellish. We cannot forget the families of Sandy Hook, and their lawsuit against Alex Jones.
All of these people deserves truth medals for standing up against the lies told about them. Because these fights are long and expensive and exhausting and are sometimes dangerous.
âď¸ This week I want to honor Wesley Lowery (wikipedia) who with Kimbriell Kelly started the Fatal Force project, which tracked killings by police when there was no national database. Recently heâs the author of Whitelash.
đš Letâs Celebrate Love â¤ď¸
This week, letâs celebrate humane societies and all they do for our furry and feathered friends. You may remember this story from a year ago, when 4000 beagles were rescued from a puppy mill in Virginia Chuck Johnston, CNN
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will transfer 4,000 beagles from a research facility in Cumberland, Virginia, to humane societies across the United States where they can be adopted, under a plan approved by a federal judge last week. A series of inspections over the course of nine months found more than 70 animal welfare violations at the Envigo breeding facility. Mortality records reviewed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed over 300 puppy deaths from January 1, 2001, to July 22, 2021, that were attributed to unknown causes. The facility also did not take any additional steps to determine the cause in order to prevent similar deaths in the future. A motion filed in June said federal agents had already seized 446 beagles. HSUS will transport the remaining beagles from the facility at its own expense over the next approximately 60-day period.
Hereâs a celebration / reunion a year later:
x Last year, 4,000 dogs were rescued from a facility in Virginia where they were being sold for testing. They were nurtured back to health, and eventually found loving homes.

Financial counseling helps people get their lives in order Kristi Eaton, Reasons to Be Cheerful
In 2021, Latoya Tart found herself deep in debt. She had taken out several loans, and struggled to pay them off while still paying for other necessities, including rent and groceries. Then Tart, 44, who works at Goodwill Industries, learned about a program offering financial counseling free of charge to any resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She started seeing a financial counselor at The Financial Empowerment Center in September 2021. âI have knocked out [loans] to at least two companies,â she says. Her counselor discussed with her the best method of eliminating loans, so she started with payday loans â typically small, high-interest loans that the borrower is meant to repay after getting their next paycheck. The Center is a partnership between the City of Tulsa and Goodwill Industries. âWe are really building capacity at the city level, to support and grow and build collaboration among the providers in town who are working to move the needle on financial stability, financial resiliency for Tulsans,â says Janae Bradford, director of the City of Tulsaâs Office for Financial Empowerment and Community Wealth. The Financial Empowerment Center falls within the Officeâs umbrella.

Following a tense debate, the European Parliament has voted in favor of a Nature Restoration Law that establishes legally binding targets to restore degraded natural areas in the European Union (EU). It is the first major piece of legislation to protect biodiversity in the EU in 30 years.
