Ghana- John Bought Land for a Shelter for the Children! [1]

Exciting news from Ghana this morning! John has just today bought a space to make a shelter for the homeless children there. This has been his dream for as long as I have known him, for over a decade, and today he took the first step to accomplish it.

This is close to the art center in Accra where John is presently living. It came to him just by luck. The chieftain who owned the property needed to sell because of an emergency and the price was very low.

I think also he may have taken much less because John is a good man with a good reputation; everyone there knows the work he is doing for the poor. But I am only guessing.

I know it doesn’t look like much but it has some space and is in a good location. John’s goal is to cement the floor and then it will be ready. (I assume it will need walls too. We really haven’t discussed many details yet.)

He wants to use it to help the kids (and adults, too) learn to make the kinds of crafts that are presently being made in the art center. Tourists and others come there and buy to take back home. John is desperate to help the children to be able to make money on their own and to start to work toward a real future.

But even if this craft schools thing doesn’t develop as he hopes, today we have taken a first step to getting at least some of the abandoned children off the streets. We cannot save them all, but even one less Anabel wandering homeless on her own at three years of age is one child saved.

Much work to do, but something solid accomplished.
