NATO is Afraid [1]

The Guardian reported yesterday evening:

Ukraine believes NATO membership is the only viable solution to prevent future attacks on it by Russia, but the US and other alliance members fear allowing Ukraine to join at some future point could be interpreted by Moscow as escalatory.

Ukraine is doing the fighting and dying while NATO watches and worries about making Putin angry. If Ukraine wins the war (by defeating the Russian army), then Ukraine can join NATO to protect Germany etc. from Russia. Perhaps our fearless leaders are waiting for a stalemate and negotiations about how much of Ukraine to sacrifice to pacify Putin.

I understand that things are not this simple, but there is a good deal of truth in the above.
