Perhaps you missed the latest Islamophobic Quran burning in Sweden.

The basic idea is that to allow “protest, the government of Sweden allowed a Quran to be publicly burned during Ramadan by a right wing group. Riots ensued. This happened a while ago but now, today, the UN Human Rights Council voted to encourage countries to “review their laws and plug gaps that may "impede the prevention and prosecution of acts and advocacy of religious hatred.””. It did pass the Council but the US and much of the EU on the Council voted it down. Their public opinion was that burning the Koran is bad, but this resolution would only protect religious symbols rather than human rights.

From Reuters

“Twenty-eight countries voted in favour, 12 voted against, and seven countries abstained. Representatives of some countries clapped after the resolution passed.”

In full disclosure, I have lived in both Kuwait and Egypt. Most of my students were Muslims learning Social Studies with me in English. I found them to be delightful and warm. We were walking to school the morning that President Obama was announced to be the next President and the doors flew open with Kuwaitees rushing out to thank us. (They did not like Bush the Son so much.) I am disappointed that the US would not support prevention and prosecutions of any religious hatred. But I am interested in further opinion here. Please keep in mind that the 9/11 terrorists did not represent all of Islam. Nor the Taliban. Islam is complicated. Way more complicated than is portrayed in the US media or Bill Maher.

And I am going out for supper shortly so it will be a bit of time before I can read your thoughts.
