Arguing over the m word is stupid [1]

On the one side you have “let’s not be what we hate” and the other “we need to fight!” The battle is over… whether to use an insult so poorly constructed that it can’t even be used verbally.



Try saying it out loud. Is it “Maw-got”? That’s what it would sound like if you use the common pronunciation of MAGA. Does that sound right? No, it sounds stupid and you’ll have to explain to listeners what the heck you’re trying to convey. On the other hand, you could say “maggot”, but that’s already a word that people use an apolitical insult.



What are you going to do to explain this insult- spell it out? “I don’t mean maggot, i mean M-A…” this is extra lame. If you find yourself doing this in real life conversation you should retire to a cabin in the woods to rethink your life choices.



Remember when right-wingers were calling us Moonbats? Did that hurt your feelings? Did you even understand what it meant?



In the end it’s an insult that can only be used online, where the pun makes sense. In your lifetime, have you seen a mind or a vote changed based on a cleverly worded online insult? No, no you haven’t, don’t even try to claim this.



OTOH it probably doesn’t say good things about us because referring to people by the name of insect larvae- something most of us would prefer to exterminate, at least in our own homes - probably isn’t great. But who among us is going to join a campaign of genocide? Is this a real thing that might happen? No.



So in the end, does it really matter? We’ve got people overstating how dangerous the term is and people conflating using a naughty insult with actual political action. I know there are few important things in the world to discuss so I’m glad we’re devoting hours to a pointless argument over a dumbass insult.
