Today I am highlighting Governor Cooper’s busy week, thanks to NC Newsline.

NC Newsline, Greg Childress, 7/5/2023

Gov. Roy Cooper on Wednesday vetoed three Republican-backed bills that Democratic lawmakers and progressive activists contend are harmful to transgender youth.

Cooper’s vetoes included House Bill 574 prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in middle high school and college athletics. Bill sponsors call it the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.”

The governor also vetoed Senate Bill 49 requiring educators to notify parents if a student uses a different name or pronoun and House Bill 808 banning surgical gender transition procedures and puberty blockers for transgender minors, even if the minor has parental permission. Medical professionals who violate the law risk losing the license.

Despite Cooper’s vetoes, the three bills are expected to become law. Republicans control the House and the Senate and can override the governor’s vetoes.
