Just Desserts
We hope that those that deserve them get them, and there’s plenty nowadays. But I’m actually referring to the sweets served after a meal. Growing up, meals were formulaic, and always included dessert. This was true in college and my stint in the Navy. As y’all know, we love restaurants, but for quite a while, though we always peruse the dessert menu, we seldom have room for anything more, no matter how enticing it looks. Many google articles claimed creme brûlée as the number one best dessert, and I do indulge at restaurants from time to time, but few are as good as the one I make from the Joy of Cooking recipe. I would say that ice cream is actually the number one dessert. Who doesn’t have some in the refrigerator? Why, it’s as American as apple pie! That’s pretty popular as well….#3.
The prime exotic dessert where I grew up in Wisconsin was Schaum Torte, a light and airy dessert (literally) bursting with springtime strawberries and whipped cream in a large baked meringue. Schaumtorte in German means foam cake. If you aren’t from the Midwest, you probably know this dessert as pavlova or just meringue. Happy memories on the special occasions this was served. If I ever see it on a menu I’ll order it.
Another one was the ice cream sundae with caramel and chocolate and whipped cream from K and L Bistro, which is no longer in business. I couldn’t resist that no matter how full I was.
Do you have dessert every day? What’s your favorite? Does fresh fruit count as dessert? Do you bring dessert to potlucks? Does anyone even go to potlucks any more?
I put this image of the fabulous corn/lobster bisque from Willi’s Winebar on yesterday’s KTK, but here it is again. I’ve been thinking about it all day, and plan to go back soon for the short season they feature it. Several friends who have had it before have been invited.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
