Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour cleverly hidden at the intersection of religion and politics. This is an open thread where we can share our thoughts and comments about the day. Today we’re going to look at a classic American automobile which was displayed in the Portland Art Museum (PAM) as a part of a special exhibit, The Shape of Speed.

1939 Graham Combination Coupe was commonly known as the Sharknose Graham. This streamlined vehicle was designed by Amos E. Northup, the chief designer for the Murray Body Company. According to historian Michael Lamm:

“The striking, leaning-into-the-wind profile copied old racing photographs, in which the camera shutter made all the fast cars look like they were trying to outrun themselves.”

While innovate in looks, the car failed to interest Depression Era buyers and only 4,139 were sold, 10,000 fewer than the 1938 model Grahams.
