Lily Tomlin has been an entertainment dynamo for decades. From her website:
During the 1960's, After hitchhiking her way from Detroit, MI to NYC's East Village, Lily Tomlin began her career as the most inventive Howard Johnson's diner waitress anyone has ever seen. Astounding her Broadway customers with efficiency, humor and grace, Lily night after night entertained in her modified Ho-Jo's uniform. Needing to take another gig, she fell into the stand-up comedian Off-Broadway performance arena....
BTW, I remember that Ho Jo. It was right smack in Times Square. The following clip HAS to be from Laugh-In b/c Nixon is still prez. Hilarious:

Because playwright Jane Wagner cowrote a lot of Tomlin’s material — and is now her wife — just a bit of background:
Wagner made her writing debut with the highly acclaimed CBS teleplay entitled J.T (1969), a special for which she won the coveted Peabody Award…. It was J.T. that brought Wagner to the attention of Lily Tomlin, who was seeking the help of a writer for her television character, the precocious Edith Ann. Tomlin was impressed with the humanity and depth of Wagner’s writing and felt that Wagner would bring similar depth to Tomlin’s comedic characters.
They have been together for more than 50 years. Of their first meeting, US Magazine reported, ‘“She had on hot pants, stretchy boots that went up to her knee, and a little backpack,” Tomlin remembered. “I don’t know what it was, but I was in love.”’
