Thursday GNR: Speaking Biden [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2023-07-06

Political pundits laugh at “Bidenisms”. But the laugh’s on them, and even more on the MAGA extremist Brandon haters. Remember the truth. Speak the truth. Remember who told you the truth.

He had me at “Get in.”

See, here’s the deal.

No, I mean it.

No joke.

Let’s finish the job.

Give me a break.

God love ya.

C’mon, man!

Geez, man!

Look, Buster…

As my football coach used to say, lots of luck in your senior year.

Particularly in the last semester, after your football eligibility runs out

Those are the facts: Check it out. Check it out!

Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget. I’ll tell you what you value.

We’re tired of being played for suckers.

My wife has an expression: “Any country that out-educates us will outcompete us.”

If my mother were here, she’d say, ‘Joe, hush up and start taking some questions.’

“My dad had an expression,” Biden said in the first speech of his campaign, and almost every one since. “He said, ‘Joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about your dignity. It’s about respect.’ ”

My dad had an expression. “Joey, don’t compare me to the Almighty, compare me to the alternative.“

My father used to say, ‘The greatest sin of all is the abuse of power. And the ultimate sin, the cardinal sin, is for a man to raise his hand to a woman.“

“My father had an expression,” Biden told [Japanese Prime Minister] Abe. “He said, ‘The only conflict that is worse than one that is intended is one that is unintended.’ ”

His dad: “Never complain and never explain.”

His mom again: “Remember, nobody is better than you, but you’re better than nobody. Everybody’s equal.”

Every time I’d walk out of my Grandpa Finnegan’s house up in Scranton he’d yell, “Joey, keep the faith, And my grandmother would yell, ‘No, Joey. Spread the faith. Spread it!”

WaPo (paywalled): Joe Biden unspools an endless supply of ‘Bidenisms’ on the campaign trail

Literally true, but not cause and effect

They are falling away by the millions each year, which is one every few seconds.

Enjoy. Spread the faith.

Repellent Rascals Rushing to Ruin

Do I have to spell it out for you? Courts, issues, elections, wackadoodledoo conspiracy theories…I’m not going to belabor the increasingly obvious.

Well...not TOO much

With all due respect, that’s a bunch of malarkey.

But there is more.

Dumbth

Meet the dumbest Republicans in the House—it’s not who you think, by Kos

The dumbest Republicans in the House are those who voted to impeach President Joe Biden, despite representing Biden districts.

Karma

Gym Jordan is about to face the music

With all the bad decisions coming out of the Supreme Court last week, there is one decision that flew under the radar, and it is about to impact Jim Jordan in a major way. On Monday, June 26 , 2023, SCOTUS ruled that the lawsuit brought against Ohio State University by hundreds of athletes who claim sexual abuse by trainer Richard Strauss can go forward. Part of the lawsuit directly implicates Jordan, as it states that he not only turned a blind eye to this abuse, but also states that Jordan obstructed justice by tampering with witnesses. Jim Jordan’s days in Congress are numbered. It is just a matter of time, as the trial against Ohio State moves forward.

Neal Katyal said yesterday on The Beat with Ari Melber, as Ari grinned,

I’m really glad I’m a Hindu, because karma is really coming back to bite Donald Trump.

SCOTUS Steps in It Yet Again

The original Flowers decision in 2019:

Supreme Court Reverses Mississippi Death Penalty Case Due to Racial Bias

The current decision:

Supreme Court backtracked on Black death row inmates’ racial bias claims, liberal justices say

The Supreme Court previously ruled for Mississippi inmate Curtis Flowers on his claim that prosecutors unlawfully blocked Black jurors, but it rejected a similar appeal from another Mississippi inmate, Tony Clark, last week. …in its latest decision, the Supreme Court effectively told the Mississippi Supreme Court that it could ignore what the Flowers ruling had concluded, Sotomayor said. The Mississippi court's decision in May 2022 upholding Clark's conviction "was a direct repudiation" of the Supreme Court's Flowers ruling, she added. "This can only be read as a signal from the Mississippi Supreme Court that it intends to carry on with business as usual, no matter what this court said in Flowers," Sotomayor wrote. She went on to opine that the Court’s action in this case was “unconstitutional”. That’s fantastically strong language to come from the bench. Regular Good News

With the new program, 80 percent of U.S. households would typically pay no tuition and half would pay no tuition, housing or meals. Meanwhile, those that had Affirmative Action programs are retooling them to make it clear that there is no “race card” guaranteeing admission, and that disadvantage is not a matter of checking a box, but of lived experience. When Mike Pence, as Governor of Indiana, signed his bogus Religious Freedom Restoration Act, only one business, Memories Pizza, took him up on it, and promptly went out of business. In the current case, the complainant was never in the wedding Web site business.

Pence refused to name these assorted bigots, but we had no trouble finding out

In this case, there was no gay wedding. The person named as the prospective customer in the suit is straight, married with a daughter, and has nothing to do with the suit.

x It's ironic that attorneys who brought the fake gay wedding cake case to SCOTUS could be disbarred. But the Justices who lied and took bribes go un punished. Meanwhile, the ruling still stands.

There is a legal procedure for asking SCOTUS to rehear a case when major new evidence turns up, as is happening here. Watch this space. Who will be the first idiot to proclaim their hatred out loud and destroy a real business?

Court Reform is Coming

President Biden has said recently that he is not there yet, but he is considering it seriously. We can help him.

An Ethics Code for the Court is obviously needed.

I don’t care for term limits or a mandatory retirement age, which would also toss out the good guys and gals. I’m fine with discussing it.

Court expansion is clearly Constitutional and clearly needed to counteract theft of seats and perjury before Congress, and to restore balance to the Force—I mean the Appellate Courts, which should each have one justice to deal with. That was how the Court was expanded to nine Justices, way back when.

We don’t have the numbers to impeach and convict the liars and cheats, but that is no impediment to ordinary indictments.

And don’t tell me the country couldn’t stand such a Constitutional crisis.

x Hello friends.

So, here at @thenation I've been working on a new podcast. It's called Contempt of Court and it will be a limited series where I talk about Supreme Court reform. The theory and politics behind each major aspect out there

Pulsars and Gravitational Waves

There are numerous pulsar timing arrays producing new results on the gravitational wave background radiation, with promises of a wide range of new results.

There are many applications for pulsar timing arrays. The best known is the use of an array of millisecond pulsars to detect and analyse gravitational waves.

Pulsar timing is so precise that even nanosecond delays are measurable. We are seeing 10-nanosecond delays.

In 2023, NANOGrav, EPTA, PPTA, and IPTA announced that they found evidence of an universal gravitational wave background. North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves states, that they were created over cosmological time scales by supermassive black holes, identifying the distinctive Hellings-Downs curve in 15 years of radio observations of 25 pulsars.[3] Similar results are published by European Pulsar Timing Array, who claimed a 3 σ-significance. They expect that a 5 σ-significance will be achieved [in] 2025 by combining the measurements of several collaborations.[4][5]

Medicine

Scientists Find Hormone Pathway That May Speed Up Calorie Burning

The hormone growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) stopped mice from automatically lowering their energy use when they ate less, speeding up another metabolic process in their muscles. "We have discovered that in mice, GDF15 blocks the slowing of metabolism that occurs during dieting by ramping up calcium futile cycling in muscle," says Gregory Steinberg, a medical scientist at McMaster University in Canada. Previous research has established that GDF15 and its associated receptor GFRAL impact the amount of food mice will eat. Now researchers think it could help keep weight off in the longer term and help with dieting in the first place.

Support your local cartoonists, and the striking writers. There may be an actors’ strike soon, too.

Some of the cartoons I came across this week weren’t funny, so I took my own advice and fogodaboudem. This isn’t funny, but it does it the right way.
