When we brought Rudy home some years ago, his inner struggles came home, too.
He guarded my wife with pain in his eyes, when he lunged at me: "I love you man, but people are bad, and I don't trust you with her." My wife and I wondered why he was so protective of her. He never tried to bite me, he did put his paws on my shoulders, stood on his hind legs with his nose next to mine. And then and gave the I love you but don’t proceed toward her look.
After some love, patience and a lot of medication, he turned a corner and my wife began telling me "He's your dog now. He chose you."
We had some really good years and I am so grateful for every day he was in our life.
He finally felt safe and learned to cope with his emotional roller coasters, but his poor body had been through so much. He lost his hard fought battle against kidney disease after contracting lepto and now there was liver failure. With our grandson, Aaron during a Christmas — love at first sight. He stopped eating. We knew it was time. There had been some other signs. The kind folks at the emergency vet that we go to, brought him into the room after the tests told us his organs were shutting down.
He sauntered over to the missus, laid down with his head in her lap, and looked up at her for a long time, as if to say "It's okay Mom. I'm really tired." He died in our arms.
And for those here at PWB — thank you for following Rudy's journey and all the love you've shared in your posts over the years. Run free Rudy. Here's some photos of Rudy and some shots of Rudy with our grandson, Aaron and Rudy’s best pal, Kato. Rest in peace, I miss you so much my sweet prince.
The sun did shine and set on you.
We rescued him back in 2015 at a park from a rescue organization. He was quiet and did not interact with the other dogs. (We had three at the time, Chelsea, Kato and Yoki.) We had Kato, a German shepherd with us and they did say hello but not much. My wife was told there was an older female German shepherd that was being fostered by their rescue group and we thought it would she would be a nice addition to our pack. When we got there, we were told that she was already adopted. However, we were told that there was a young male German shepherd by the name of Rudy that was up for fostering or adoption. He was first spotted by the rescue group dodging vehicles in Detroit. Apparently he was at a construction site as a guard dog with no owner. Nothing like pals. Kato tolerated him and that was good enough for me. It wasn’t long before they were inseparable. We have so many wonderful memories and I’m so grateful for the time we had. We tried fostering and failed — we both knew we were going to keep him. We did.
Coyote patrol alert.
Oh man, those were the days.
In sync.
Buddies!
Down for some fun.
Rudy and Kato.
Boy, do I miss you
My sweet boy.
Rudy passed in March, it took a while for me to be able to write this. Thank you for letting me share.
