Glenn Close is probably best known in the U.S. as a movie star — but she shouldn’t be. Her first love was the stage, and her internationally acclaimed turn as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard cemented her reputation as a Broadway star.

She “never even thought about movies”:
Close ... made her Broadway debut in 1974's Love for Love. At first, she loved the stage so much that she did not seriously consider film acting. "I went into acting just thinking about the stage," she said. "All the games I used to play as a child, I never even thought about movies." www.biography.com/...

The Guardian had this to say about her West End performance as Norma Desmond:
[T]he chief pleasure of Lonny Price’s production lies in watching Close, who has already played Norma in Los Angeles and New York. Her big achievement is to treat the character not as a grotesque harpy but as a real woman who lives in a remembered past. You believe her when, in one of Lloyd Webber’s best numbers, she hymns the days of the silent movies and sings: “When I look your way / You’ll hear what I say.” www.theguardian.com/...
Close’s own take on performance speaks directly to what that reviewer noted:
Acting, to me, is about the incredible adventure of examining the landscape of human heart and soul. That's basically what we do. Glenn Close

With the hugely talented women I've worked with or observed, it's not a question about temperament or ego; it's a question about getting it right. If they've got a reputation for being difficult it's usually because they just don't suffer fools. Glenn Close

As an actor, I go where the good writing is. That's the bottom line. Glenn Close

I love the chemistry that can be created onstage between the actors and the audience. It's molecular, even, the energies that can go back and forth. I started in theater, and when I first went into movies, I felt that my energy was going to blow out the camera. Glenn Close
