Can a Collective Daily Kos Effort Make a Twitter Replacement Succeed? [1]

I don’t have to remind you what Twitter has become under Musk. But despite the fascism and misinformation it is still the predominant platform for short online communication. I still have some hope Musk will somehow depart and Twitter will survive in a better form. But in the meantime, there are a bunch of potential successors — Post, Mastodon, Bluesky, Tribel, Spoutible, Reddit, Substack Notes, Facebook/Meta/Threads

This article, Winners and Losers from the Great Twitter Meltdown, evaluated different platforms’ response to the Twitter outage last Saturday, finding Bluesky the big loser and Post and the incipient Meta/Threads the big winners. As for the latter, yes, Zuckerberg is awful, but marginally less so than Musk.

I’m not sure how many active users there are on Daily Kos, but I know there are a lot of us. I know Daily Kos has been a force multiplier for fundraising, volunteering and other activism.

What if we at Daily Kos collectively got behind one of the alternatives? Do we have the numbers to make a difference? If so, which one do you support?

Take the poll.
