Israel has launched a major aerial and ground offensive into the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, its biggest military operation in the Palestinian territory in years, in what it described as an “extensive counter-terrorism effort”. At least eight Palestinians were killed and 50 injured, 10 seriously, in the attack that began at about 1am on Monday, and the death toll is likely to rise, according to the Palestinian health ministry. On Monday afternoon, Israeli sources suggested they would need at least another 24 hours to complete the operation.

Palestinian leaders have called Israel’s largest military operation in Jenin in 20 years a “new war crime” after at least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded. A spokesman for Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday called on the international community to “break its shameful silence and take serious action”. “What the Israeli occupation government is doing in the city of Jenin and its camp is a new war crime against our defenceless people,” Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement. “The Palestinian people will not surrender or raise the white flag but will remain steadfast on their land in the face of this brutal aggression until the occupation is defeated and freedom is achieved,” he added.

Rebecca Journey, a lecturer at the University of Chicago, thought little of calling her new undergraduate seminar “The Problem of Whiteness.” Though provocatively titled, the anthropology course covered familiar academic territory: how the racial category “white” has changed over time. She was surprised, then, when her inbox exploded in November with vitriolic messages from dozens of strangers. One wrote that she was “deeply evil.” Another: “Blow your head clean off.” The instigator was Daniel Schmidt, a sophomore and conservative activist with tens of thousands of social media followers. He tweeted, “Anti-white hatred is now mainstream academic inquiry,” along with the course description and Dr. Journey’s photo and university email address. Spooked, Dr. Journey, a newly minted Ph.D. preparing to hit the academic job market, postponed her class to the spring. Then she filed complaints with the university, accusing Mr. Schmidt of doxxing and harassing her.

When I told my doctor I had an opportunity to get a full body MRI for work, he told me not to do it. He cited the general medical community's opinion that, for most adults, the benefits of full body scans won't outweigh the risks of chasing down a (likely benign) finding with invasive follow-up procedures. Because while there's a slim chance the scan will lead to an early diagnosis of a serious health condition or cancer, the likelihood it'll find something a little off in your body is all but guaranteed. If they were a good idea, he said, doctors would be recommending them to all of their patients who could afford to get one. (Prices for a full-body scan, which look for tumors and other abnormalities in all the major bodily systems, range from $1,350 to $2,500.)

Riots in France appear to be calming, after five days of violent protests in response to the shooting of teenager Nahel M during a police traffic stop. Sunday night saw violence subside and fewer arrests were made. However, President Emmanuel Macron has asked the interior ministry to keep a "massive" police presence on the streets. On Monday, mayors called for rallies to be held outside town halls to protest the violence and looting. In Nanterre, Nahel's hometown, mayor Patrick Jarry said he was pleased the violence had subsided, but added that "we shouldn't lose sight of the incident that sparked this situation and the continuing need for justice".

Travel chaos is dogging US airports on the eve of Independence Day, with more than 100 million Americans under extreme weather warnings. More than 1,700 flights were delayed or cancelled on Monday. It follows one of the busiest air travel weekends on record. Sunday saw the highest number of passengers ever screened at US airports. Severe storms threaten a swathe of the eastern US, while the south and west continue to bake in a heatwave.

TORNIO, Finland/KARLSKRONA, Sweden, July 3 (Reuters) - High above a railway bridge spanning a foaming river just outside the Arctic Circle, Finnish construction workers hammer away at a project that will smooth the connections from NATO's Atlantic coastline in Norway to its new border with Russia. "We will be removing some 1,200 of these one by one," says site manager Mika Hakkarainen, holding up a rivet. Until February 2022, the 37-million euro ($41 million) electrification of this short stretch of rail – the only rail link between Sweden and Finland – simply promised locals a chance to catch a night train down to the bright lights of Stockholm.

July 3 (Reuters) - The Biden administration's climate agenda is facing an unexpected challenge in drought-prone Corpus Christi, Texas, where a proposed clean hydrogen hub would require the installation of energy-intensive, expensive and potentially environmentally damaging seawater desalination plants. The Gulf Coast port is in the running for up to $1 billion available under President Joe Biden's 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to create a regional hub to produce hydrogen, a low-emissions fuel made by electrolyzing water that can help decarbonize heavy-emitting industries and transportation.

The announcement came two days after the city celebrated the 26th anniversary of its handover from Britain to China and the third anniversary of the announcement of the national security law. Police said the accused would have their assets frozen. They also warned the Hong Kong public that supporting any of the eight financially could risk violating the law. "They have committed very serious offences that endanger national security," said chief superintendent of the national security department, Steven Li. [...] UK-based rights group Hong Kong Watch said Britain, the US, and Australia — each of which is hosting one or more of the accused — should issue statements to guarantee "the safety of those activists named and the wider Hong Kong community living overseas" The UK condemned the warrants, with British Foreign Minister James Cleverly saying the UK would not tolerate any attempts to intimidate individuals.

Vietnamese officials told state media on Monday that they would ban the upcoming "Barbie" fantasy comedy movie, the first film stemming from the famous doll franchise that will involve real actors. Scenes showing a map with China's disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea, known as the "nine-dash line" because China uses nine dashes to demarcate the area it claims on a map, were the reason given for the state censors' decision. What did Vietnamese officials say? "The film review board watched the film and made the decision to ban the screening of this movie in Vietnam due to a violation regarding the 'nine-dash line,'" Vietnam's Department of Cinema director, Vi Kien Thanh, told the Dan Tri news site. Another state media outlet, Tien Phong, reported that the nine-dash line appeared multiple times in the movie.

The number of women who died within a year after pregnancy more than doubled between 1999 and 2019 in the United States, a new study has found, with the highest number of deaths recorded among Black women. The study, published on Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at maternal deaths between 1999 and 2019 — but not the COVID-19 pandemic spike — for every US state and five racial and ethnic groups. There were an estimated 1,210 maternal deaths in 2019, compared with 505 in 1999, the researchers found. Overall, the number of deaths per 100,000 live births rose from 12.7 to 32.2 in that 20-year span, while the number of deaths among Black women increased from 26.7 to 55.4. The greatest jump over time was seen among American Indian and Alaska Native women, however – from 14 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1999 to 49.2 in 2009.

In state after state, conservative lawmakers this year have banned medical treatment designed for transgender youth dealing with changes in their gender identity. Now, a growing number of federal judges are blocking those laws from taking effect. US district court judges have halted such laws in six states so far – Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee – finding that they infringe on the constitutional guarantee to equal protection under the 14th amendment to the US constitution. Two lawsuits challenging laws in Montana and Georgia have yet to be ruled on, and in Oklahoma the opposing sides in May agreed to set aside the law until the court case is heard.

Rishi Sunak risks damaging “cultural security” and faces defeat at the next general election unless emergency measures to curb net migration are introduced, a new group of Conservative MPs has warned. As Downing Street slapped down the group’s proposals to cut visas issued to care workers, members of the New Conservatives grouping said that ignoring their 12-point plan could end in electoral defeat. The comments were made at a launch event of the organisation’s plans to cut net migration from 606,000 to 226,000 before the end of 2024.

Scientists working off the coast of Costa Rica say they've discovered the world's third known octopus nursery. The international 18-person research team found the site nearly 2 miles below sea level and believe that in the process they may have also discovered a new species of Muusoctopus, a genus of small to medium sized octopus lacking an ink sack." The discovery of a new active octopus nursery over 2,800 meters beneath the sea surface in Costa Rican waters proves there is still so much to learn about our Ocean," Dr. Jyotika Virmani, executive director of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, said in a statement.

From the moment the Supreme Court decision overturning the right to an abortion was leaked last spring, researchers and pundits began to predict the consequences. A year later, data is beginning to bring the real-life effects into focus. Over a dozen states have near total abortion bans, with several more state bans in the works. At least 26 clinics have closed. In Texas, nearly 10,000 more babies were born in the state since its 2021 "heartbeat bill" took effect. The number of abortions that happened nationally declined, though not as much as many anticipated. Health care workers provided 25,000 fewer abortions through March 2023. For context, there were around 930,000 abortions in 2020 according to the Guttmacher Institute.

The manhunt for at least two shooters who struck 30 people at a Baltimore block party stretched into a second day as the stunned city mourned the victims and braced for the possibility of more violence. Police identified the two fatalities as Aaliyah Gonzalez, 18, and Kylis Fagbemi, 20. Twenty-three of the 28 people wounded were teens, and more than half are minors. The oldest was 32. Police have not identified suspects and said federal and state law enforcement teams were aiding the investigation. Just last week, officials had announced a sharp decline in the city's violent crime rate, citing the "expanded collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement."
