Lewis Army Museum: Some Army vehicles (photo diary) [1]

The Lewis Army Museum on Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Washington includes outdoor displays of several Army vehicles.

M5 Tractor

This 13-ton vehicle was used in World War II and the Korean War.

M-725, Truck 1 ¼ ton 4 X 4 Ambulance

This Vietnam War era vehicle had a Kaiser 230 cubic inch inline 6-cylinder engine. It has a top speed of 65 mph and a range of 225 miles. According to the display:

“The vehicle proved to be more fragile than the old M-37 truck chassis with a poor maintenance record. This vehicle only served in the Vietnam War and was phased out after seven years of service.”

M-170 Truck ¼ ton 4X4 Ambulance

This vehicle has a Willys inline 4-cylinder, 68 horsepower engine. It has a top speed of 55 mph and a range of 300 miles. According to the display:

“The M-170 Ambulance began one of the U.S. Army’s primary light medical vehicles during the mid-1950s and was in service into the early years of the Vietnam War. It was built to transport injured soldiers from a safe area near combat lines back to rear area Army Hospitals.”

M-37 Truck ¾ ton 4X4 Weapons Carrier

This vehicle has a Dodge 4-cylinder 92 horsepower engine. It has a top speed of 54 mph and a range of 240 miles.

D KW 2 ½ Ton 6X6 Amphibian; World War II-Korean War

M-274 “Mule” 4X4 Light Weapons Carrier

This vehicle has a Willys 2-cylinder 15 horsepower engine. It has a top speed of 25 mph and a range of 107 miles. According to the display:

“The primary purpose of the Mule was as a light weight infantry weapons and equipment carrier, designed to move cross-country and keep pace with infantry men at foot speeds in combat. This small vehicle was adapted into multiple uses in combat during the Vietnam War.”
