Congressional Hypocrisy on Ukraine [1]

There is a lot of sturm and drang over Ukraine in congress. The debate deserves some attention, because it’s very important and disingenuous. Mike Pence just visited Kyiv. Pramila Jayapal supports Ukraine, but she was also behind the letter suggesting Ukraine should cede land and compromise. Donald Trump will end the war in 24 hours. Republicans generally don’t care or want Russia to win. What does all of this mean?

Let’s go in order. Mike Pence is at 1 percent to 5 percent in the polls. He is part of the more traditional vanguard who believe Reagan was God. Reagan single-handedly ended the Cold War and saved the United States from creeping liberalism. This one is easy. Pence has nothing to lose and is parroting his favorite 1980’s talking points. He’s a comically hypocritical ally for now.

Pramila Jayapal is a little harder to read. She leads a liberal caucus devoted to the laudable causes of ending war and reducing the influence of the military industrial complex. The problem is an imperialist nation anathema to these objectives invaded Ukraine. Her Progressive Caucus quickly retracted the aforementioned letter when it became public. I doubt Jayapal ever supports more money for the Pentagon, but her caucus appears resigned to the fact war is sometimes necessary.

Donald Trump likely doesn’t require much explanation. He doesn’t care. He’d support Ukraine if it helped him. The problem is he’d also support eating young children on the lawn if it helped him. He’s a contemptible human being.

Republicans are racist. I said it. They are afraid of changing demographics. They trumpet this racism every day on Fox News and conservative radio. They champion people like Putin and Orban for a reason. Both dictators lead oppressive societies Republicans pine to create. Republicans reminisce about a world where women cook and clean, men make the rules, and colored people are enslaved, even if figuratively.

In conclusion, congress needs to get its act together. There are a few senators and representatives I despise who are in the right place on Ukraine. Lindsey Graham comes to mind. Let’s continue doing everything we can to maintain support for Ukraine and nudge the persuadable in the right direction.
