July 4th Holiday- making good choices, and staying safe [1]

July 4th weekend is a time for celebration, and reflection. It is a time to visit with friends and family, and maybe see some spectacular fireworks, and maybe have an adult beverage or 2. All good.

Unfortunately, this holiday weekend is also one of the most dangerous, especially on our highways.

Here are tips from the NHTSA

If you plan to drink, make a plan ahead of time for a sober ride home.

Even if you’ve had only one drink, let someone who hasn’t been drinking take you home. A sober driver is one who does not drink at all, not the one who’s had the least to drink.

If you’re hosting a Fourth of July gathering, help the designated drivers out by making sure there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.

Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.

If you see an impaired driver on the road, safely pull over and call 911.

Always wear your seat belt.

Take note of the second point, which is truly excellent advice. Be safe- protect yourself, and protect others using the roadways. If you are planning on drinking at all, plan to let someone else drive. There is no reason to take risks with your safety, or that of others.

As well, alcohol use is very often implicated in all sorts of trauma- boating, fireworks, jumping off roofs into pools and missing, you name it- if people can hurt themselves, alcohol increases the chances of something bad happening. For those few here who work in Emergency Rooms, you know this all too well.

Be smart, be safe, and have a wonderful and enjoyable July 4th Holiday.
