Sometimes I feel like I’m on a goodbye tour, since I can feel the climate changing as I go, with wildfires, drought, floods and freak storms plaguing my schedule. My grandfather’s wildlife is in decline or already gone. Many park sites have plaques dedicated to the first director of the national park system, Stephen Mather, praising him for saving the parks “unimpaired for future generations”. Turns out it’s not enough to protect a few dispersed parks, when we’re ruining the whole globe’s climate.
But at the same time, I feel like the luckiest person alive to be able to see the whole range of parks, from heartbreaking tragedies to sublime natural beauty, without the guilt of contributing to carbon burning vehicle emissions. One of my favorite things to do is to pick my favorite parks, so, after recently completing visits to 318 our of 424 national park units—75%—, I have a few updates to my first 100 favorites. [Please follow the ad-free, non-commercial Wordpress blog links to see a photo and read about each site, as these are the best of America’s best idea.]
Alas Agate, Dinosaur is the best fossil site.
Move over Grant, the best Presidential home—not including the White House—is Sagamore Hill.
Shiloh keeps the best battle tour, but Gettysburg has the best Civil War museum.
My second 100 favorites still hold. Now, here are some my new favorites from my most recent 100 visits.
Best bicycling: Cuyahoga.
Best birds: Padre Island.
Best cliff dwellings: Mesa Verde.
Best colonial era park is, uh, Colonial.
Best fort: Castillo de San Marco.
Best geologic feature: Arches (see photo) or Natural Bridges.
Best place to learn geology: Capitol Reef.
Best kayaking: Big Thicket.
Best snow day: Zion.
Best trees: Great Basin.
And last but not least, ‘least like a normal park’: Port Chicago.
