Georgia O'Keeffe: Starlight Night Lake George (1922)
Good evening, Kibitzers!
This is the date of my mom and dad’s anniversary, and that is why I have picked Georgia O’Keeffe’s Starlight Night Lake George for today’s little bonus seasonal artwork. They went to Lake George for their honeymoon, and famously got in huge trouble because my mom did not call her mother to say they’d gotten there safely. Her new husband persuaded her that she was an adult woman and didn’t have to call her mother. It wasn’t his fault; he did not yet realize that, when you fail to call, that obviously means you’re lying dead somewhere. He was soon enlightened. Luckily, they were forgiven. Eventually.
I had somewhere to go on Monday night, so today I bring you another seemingly random video assortment. I think there’s something here that almost everyone will be interested in.
First, here’s a great short animation that puts the old joke/childhood fantasy about digging all the way through the earth to China in perspective. [2:53]
Here is an account of how and why the mid-infrared camera MIRI on the JWST is cooled to near-absolute zero using sound! [9:11]
For my Cottage-core people, a British architect explains the different styles of traditional English cottage. (Note: occasionally, she just stops talking and lets you look at images. I find this admirable, but one might worry briefly that the sound has quit working.) [16:16]
I think we all know who this video is directed at. This YouTuber in Minnesota goes with his dog to his 8’x10’ cabin hut in the woods to experience what he describes as “one of the year's best winter storms”. [22:09]
I think we’ve seen Jim from Long Island cook Italian food before. I thought a summer soup would be good for this diary, and then I saw it was a zucchini soup, which can be very helpful to those suffering an abundance of that vegetable. And THEN he said it was from his Sicilian grandmother, she made it with broken spaghetti, and it had originally used “googootz”, a vegetable my grandpa could never stop talking about. (Its name in standard Italian is “cucuzza”.)
I don’t think I’ve ever had this soup, although the broken-spaghetti practice applied to many soups. I honestly don’t know if my grandma didn’t make it, or if I wouldn’t eat it at the time. But it looks good now! [14:41]
This poor little barn owl baby has no one home to reassure him when he first hears thunder. [0:22]
I had a whole diary a while back of videos by this Canadian guy who lives in Amsterdam and posts about non-car-dependent cities. In this new video, he addresses an argument that’s heard a lot about why the US “can’t” do what many European countries have done to improve their cities. [13:00]
I might not always think of an episode of Drunk History as an appropriate salute to an important historical event. But I think in this case, queer writer and comedian Crissle West has provided narration in just the right tone. Happy Pride to everyone, and a toast in memory of Stonewall leaders Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera! [6:00]
This channel is about small-scale organic gardening, chicken-keeping, and use of wild plants. I was surprised to see “grow your own toilet paper” as a topic, but it seemed like something it might be good to know about, times being what they are. [8:59]
This Playing for Change video of Santana’s Oye Como Va is greatly enhanced by having Carlos Santana himself on lead guitar, and also his extremely talented percussionist wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, on drums. [4:59]
