Olivia Chow has been elected Mayor of Toronto [1]

Olivia Chow won the race for mayor of Toronto tonight. Toronto is the largest city in Canada, third largest in Canada-US (after New York and Los Angeles) and fifth largest in the western hemisphere (after the former plus Havana and Mexico City).

Chow is a democratic socialist and a long-time member of the New Democratic Party. She is the widow of Jack Layton, who led the NDP to official opposition status in Canada’s Parliament. She stands for affordable housing, public transportation (which she uses regularly), getting off fossil fuels, and policing reform, among many other issues.

Chow was opposed by most of the established interests in the city, and in provincial politics, but she jumped into an early lead on her record as a city councillor, and never looked back.
