Two weeks ago, I had my 8- and 11-year-old spend each day with me for the whole week. I didn’t much enjoy it; I’ll tell you what. First the mom got all her scheduling mixed up, so it was all pretty crazy. I don’t do spontaneous; I like a plan.
Then there were the kids themselves. They stayed glued to their I Pad/Chrome Book whatever's. They were rude and demanding. They usually help me do stuff at my house. This time they asked if they would be paid and when I said no, they said no.
I finally told them I would pay. They asked how much. I said $10 an hour, an outrageous amount but I love these guys. They said their mom pays them $20. They didn’t do the work. Entitled little shit heads.
I’ll give you just 2 examples of how they talked to me. I picked them up 3 of the 5 days at baking camp. I would get out of my car and go in and get them. Getting back in and starting my car, the stereo was pretty loud, that’s how I like it.
The 1st day the 11-year-old got in the car and yelled “Down!” I turned around and asked if he had a dog in the back with him. The last day they were here I was so sick of the I Pad’s. I had them come into the den where I was going to watch a documentary about elephants. I said they could still play with their I Pads but I would secretly distract with the show. Nope.
My boys
When the show started the 8-year-old looked up and said (with headphones on)
“It’s a little loud”. I said, “yeah”.
He said “It’s a little loud, did you hear me? I said “yeah”.
Again, he said, “It’s a little loud”. I said “and?”
We repeated that several times until finally he said “Oh. Could you turn it down please?”
I worry about their brains melting and how they will ever learn to interact socially with so much screen time.
Unbelievably, I agreed to keep them this week, starting today, as well. What was I thinking? This week though I have a plan. The kids are doing yard work for free! NO I Pads allowed. I have a bunch of fun stuff planned for them and hope it will be more fun for me this time.
