Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day: Philip Gunn [1]

Welcome to what is the 1214th original profile here at “Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day”, where we’ll be discussing Philip Gunn, who was first elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives back in 2003, and rose to become the House Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives in 2012, likely because Republicans heard his surname and still needed to overcompensate by clinging to a Gunn.



Our reasons for profiling Philip Gunn could have been due to his sponsorship of a “religious freedom” bill that would have made it legal for state officials and religious organizations to discriminate against the LGBTQ community due to their “deeply held faith” and not just that they were bigots, (not that Gunn wrote it, mind you, he submitted a bill authored by an Arizona-based hate group). Maybe we could have profiled him because he is an anti-choice zealot so extreme that he was the sponsor of the six week abortion ban in Mississippi that would lead to Roe v. Wade being overturned, and stated his belief that 12 year old victim of rape and incest should be forced to carry her father’s child to term.



But no, our reason that this guy really earned a FRED profile is that he is tied to the Southern Baptist Convention’s sexual abuse scandal, helping cover up the molestation of young boys by a Baptist minister, making sure the perpetrator was never named publicly, and helping him get a plea deal where he never served any jail time. He continued to claim, against all the evidence and testimony of victims, that the abuses never occurred. And we feel like that’s all we need to say about this. As his party screams about supposed “groomers” on the left, and wants to protect Christian families from gay people just existing and having the same rights as anyone else, this guy was also trying to ignore getting justice for children who were raped.



That probably has something to do with why he isn’t running for re-election in November. The next four months can’t pass by fast enough so we can officially say “GOOD RIDDANCE” to Philip Gunn, and remember his story when you hear Republicans baying at the moon about "groomers", but are blind and impotent to do anything about the groomers aren't from their side of the aisle.
