Call me old-fashioned, but being of a certain vintage my early geo-political interests were richly fed by the no-nonsense coups, counter-coups and counter-counter-coups which held sway throughout South America, Africa and South-East Asia in the ‘60s, ‘70s & ‘80s. Now, I’m not bemoaning the loss of these tragic and brutal events, but I am somewhat saddened and disappointed by the loss of old-skool knowledge which modern-day plotters appear to display, most noticeably so in the events of the last couple of days.

What struck me most about the whole episode was the fact that just about everything was back to front, ignoring the accumulated wisdom of the ancients in a Stockton Rush-like drive to innovate by cutting corners and going for low-hanging fruit, aka avoiding all the boring humdrum stuff.

The absolute no.1 maxim of any successful Putsch is to never let them see you coming. Everything you plan for in a coup is with the application of this overarching principle in mind, around which you base your three pillars of approach which all support each other equally — like a three-legged table:

1. Never travel with your weapons — they slow you down and give the game away as to what you might be up to.

2. Never publicise or signal your intentions — you should only be noticed when it’s too late to do anything about it.

3. Always strike the very top first and quickly work your way down (ideally in parallel) — the goal is not to occupy radio stations or the presidential palace, but to quickly neutralise anyone who can give big orders in order to bring things to a quick stand-still.

Needless to say, the Wagner boys did everything in reverse — loudly megaphoning their intent, setting off in a bizarre round-bound caravan a bazillion miles away from their no.1 target and distracting themselves by detouring into cow-poke towns and tik-toking their tanks doing spin-drifts outside the local coffee bars.

Crazy — but then again, it’s Russia we’re talking about here, where any form of applied thinking or even some basic common sense have long since checked out.
