WaPo and other sources are reporting that Belorussian dictator not only talked Prigozhin out of continuing on to Moscow, but is bringing him home to Belarus:
Charges against Wagner chief will be dropped, Kremlin says
Mercenaries halted their travel toward Moscow, Wagner Group leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin said in an audio message Saturday, a statement that appeared to end the immediate crisis after a day of troop advancement. Criminal charges against Prigozhin will be dropped, and the Wagner boss will go to Belarus, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The guarantee that Prigozhin will be able to go to Belarus is based on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s word, according to Peskov.
And we all know what Putin’s word is worth. And Lukashenko is no more trustworthy than Putin.
Continuing. . .
Prigozhin can’t be dumb enough to think all is forgiven and Putin will let him live in peace in Minsk or wherever, or for that matter that Lukashenko, one of Putin’s puppets, will do so either. So what gives? In the murky world of Russian plots, it is not impossible that Lukashenko and Prigozhin cooked this up, as a way of Prigozhin to get revenge on Putin and/or for Lukashenko to loosen the Russian screws on him.
Or it’s possible Prigozhin thought he had some Russian army units on his side, made his move, and then found himself in the position of Charlie Brown and the football. Or he was so incensed at what he saw as Russian betrayal that he impulsively ordered an attack. Or he really thought his 25,000 troops could take on the Russian army (inept as they are). In any case, when Lukashenko offered him what appears to be a way out, Prigozhin grabbed for it.
At the moment, it looks like Prigozhin got so angry for real or imagined reasons that he ordered his troops to take Rostov. When that turned into a cakewalk, he may have thought, why not go all the way to Moscow? Then, running up against the reality of the situation, murky as it is, he grasped at the out that Lukashenko was offering, figuring to lie low long enough to get out of Putin’s reach.
Putin, after all, only guaranteed he could go to Minsk. He apparently didn’t say anything about what happens after that.
