Jimmy Page was in the Yardbirds but no one knows him for that.
Neil Young and Steve Stills were in Buffalo Springfield, and I bet there are some people out there who like those old songs.
Then again, it’s not like anyone says, “yeah I like the Beatles, but their early stuff with Pete Best was better… they got too commercial when RIngo joined the band!”
Steve Vai was in Zappa’s band before he was a guitar god, and even Pat Metheny was one of the guys in Gary Burton’s early 70’s band before he met Lyle Mays and won a gazillion Grammy awards.
Which brings us to Uncle Tupelo.
They’re pictured above and the guy in the middle is Jeff Tweedy, who was a founding member of UT, but later went on to a much larger audience as the leader of Wilco.
To this day there are many listeners who debate the merits of both bands’ work, some preferring the earlier stuff. How about you all?
Do you have any favorites who went on to play in other, bigger bands that weren’t your favorite after all?
