Pete Souza sets the record straight on misused Biden photo [1]

Pete Souza is a professional photographer whose work documenting President Reagan (R, 1981 — 1989) and President Obama (D, 2009 — 2017) is in the National Archives, probably in the form of original film for the former and original memory cards for the latter. Copies of these photos are of course available for use and misuse in the public domain.

And of course if it’s Trump doing the using, it’s probably misuse. Yesterday, classified documents salesman Donald Trump posted the photo above on Truth Social with the caption, “Biden sitting outside with Lisa Monaco, second in charge of DOJ, probably working on future Plots and Schemes against Republicans.”⁣

Souza did not take kindly to his photo being used for one of Trump’s deceptions. “Shame on Donald Trump for using a photo I made to try and justify yet another one of his lies,” Souza wrote on Instagram this morning.

⁣To be fair to liar Trump, he did include the word “probably” in there, admitting that he doesn’t know for a fact what President Biden and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco were actually talking about at the time the photo was taken. And, as Souza points out, the photo is from a decade ago. Back then, Biden was the vice president, not the president, and Monaco was an advisor from Homeland Security, not the Department of Justice.

What a nice, friendly, humble guy Obama is. Don’t know what they were talking about, but I’d ask Souza before jumping to any conclusions.

Also, Souza is not a photographer in any official capacity for President Biden now. The chief White House photographer now is Adam Schultz. However, Souza did take several photos of then-Vice President Biden during President Obama’s presidency.

In his Instagram post, Souza provided a lot of context for the 2013 photo of Biden and Monaco.

To give this more context, this photo occurred after the president’s morning intelligence briefing. The VP and Lisa [Monaco] are sitting outside the Outer Oval Office at the edge of the Rose Garden (note that no trees have yet been cut down). President Obama was departing the next day to meet with the President of Mexico. The Boston Marathon bombing had occurred two weeks before.⁣ Donald Trump was then a failed businessman seeking attention by saying President Obama wasn’t a U.S. citizen.

We posted this photo on the White House website the next day as our “photo of the day.” We also posted it on the White House Flickr photo stream on June 20, 2013, as one of the photographs in our monthly albums (for May 2013). The original caption: “Vice President Joe Biden talks with Lisa Monaco, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, in the Rose Garden of the White House, May 1, 2013.” ⁣

I used a Canon 5DM3 camera, with a 24-70mm lens, with exposure of 1/320 at f/5.6 at ISO 200.⁣ The original file was transferred to the National Archives on 1/20/2017.

Thanks to all those on Twitter who brought this to my attention last night. And to those who took the further step of replying on Truth Social with a “Fact Check,” and link to the photo on Flickr. They were then banned from Truth Social.⁣

I await Trump’s apology to President Biden and Lisa, and for misusing this photograph I made.⁣

Let’s take a moment to pretend to be surprised at the dishonesty of Truth Social moderators. But, but, it’s called Truth Social! How can they… Okay, enough of that. Of course Trump should apologize for this latest deception. And of course he never will.

I don’t know what President Biden is talking about on the phone, but from his smile, I’m guessing it’s not about what a national security threat classified documents salesman Donald Trump is.
