Federal judge Aileen Cannon, of recent infamy for unbelievably bad handling of earlier motions by Trump’s lawyers on the Mar-A-Lago documents case, and routinely excoriated on this blog for her evident bias toward Trump, has just issued her first order to the lawyers. What’s remarkable about it how routine — and how speedy — it was.
CNN: Judge Cannon jumpstarts oversight of Trump classified documents case with order on security clearances
US District Judge Aileen Cannon issued her first order since former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith for allegedly mishandling classified information, instructing the parties to get the ball rolling to obtain security clearances for the lawyers who will need them. In a Thursday order, Cannon gave “all attorneys of record and forthcoming attorneys of record” a Friday deadline for getting in touch with the Justice Department’s litigation security group so that they can expedite “the necessary clearance process.” By June 20, she wants the lawyers to file a notice confirming they have complied with her instructions.
A totally routine order, standard for a case with national security complications, and the judge wants timely notice — five calendar days — that the lawyers have started working on it.
Except that this is Aileen Cannon, the Trumpie with the power to do whatever Trump wants with the case, particularly including delay, delay, delay. As the CNN story comments:
Thursday’s move by Cannon suggests an interest, at least for now, in moving the proceedings along without delay.
and
The new order also puts additional pressure on the Trump effort to expand the legal team representing him in the case. The local rules for the Florida court where the case was filed require that Trump have counsel barred in the state.
Now, figuring out what Trump, and the judges he put on the bench, will do has become an exercise reminiscent of Kremlinology in the Cold War days. And some legal experts in a position to know expect Cannon to be fair and to have learned her lesson from the last case. Foe example:
