Rocky Mountain Refuge* in collaboration with TRU Community Care hospice and their Veteran Volunteer program honored today one of our residents who was a Marine in Vietnam.
Just barely turning 18, our resident found himself swept up into the violence that was the last few months of the US involvement in Vietnam. It was a very difficult experience for him and one that has stayed with him to this day. Nonetheless, he took the oath to serve our country as a Marine, and he remains a Marine to this day (just ask him!).
In today's very moving ceremony he was saluted by Larry Sturgeon, another Vietnam Veteran, and received pins and special beads made by other Vietnam Veterans. There were many misty eyes in the audience.
Among the items he received was a star that was cut from a damaged US flag. Later, he told me that when the time comes, he wants that star to remain with him so that the flag he served under remains with him forever.
*Rocky Mountain Refuge is the only shelter in Colorado that serves people experiencing homelessness who need end of life care.
